Released to promote Longmorn as a super premium single malt maker, this edition replaced the previous 15 year old. The relaunch was certainly effective as a means to display the distillery's unique Speyside character, as this superb 16 year old was distilled using natural ingredients from the surrounding area, including local spring water, barley from Moray and peat from nearby sources. Just lovely.
Fresh and green. Notes of apple peel and bramley apple, hints of citrus and herbal notes. There are some notes of balsa wood, calvados and plenty of dry oaken tannins.
Rich and compact. Notes of lemon zest and a leafy greenness. A good level of tannins develops with a vinous character and spice. The oak is dry and full.
Long and dry with a zesty quality.

Well balanced. Great Spice & Body. Lovely presentation too.
The title sums it up. I gave up drinking Scotch whisky for a smoother Irish whiskey, but now I've tried Longmorn...
Oh my!! Outstanding scotch.

It seems that the 16yo 48% expression is being replaced by a same-priced NAS (garanteed to be at least 3 years old) and watered down to the legal limit of 40%. But, to compensate, it is now called Distiller's Reserve. Another distillery replacing good entry level offerings with marketingware. My guess is that the Whisky crash of the 1980s will be nothing in comparison to the upcoming Whisky crash of 2020 (if not sooner), and that few Whisky enthusiasts will shed a tear.
