Loch Lomond
Scotland
Single Malt
12-year-old single malt Scotch whisky from Loch Lomond, who are well known for being able to produce a wide variety of styles of whisky in their Highland distillery. This particular expression was made using the distillery's unique straight-neck stills and more traditional swan-neck stills, and aged in a selection of bourbon, refill and recharged American oak casks.
Creamy vanilla, with a touch of freshly baked apple turnover.
Brown sugar and five-spice. Orchard fruit notes continue, with a hint of yellow plum too.
Quite drying with subtle woody smoke, though still sweet with vanilla.
This really was a surprise given some negative reviews (that's whisky tasting for you). Lovely smooth oily mouth feel (much better than it sounds), got the smoky nose and interesting dry finish. A really complex whisky for the price. I'd fully agree with those that have rated it 4-5 stars.
First taste of this and very satisfying. Agree with the tasting notes with an emphasis on the creaminess. It also kicks nice in the back of the throat.
Beautifully complex. I would not pour it for a first timer. If you are a newer whisky drinker or prefer main stream blends you'll only get the "medicinal/grain alchohol" notes that the low reviews write of. 46% but feels like 48. Strong burn on the finish that you can really explore if you give her time. Full bodied oak that melows over time, cherries, baked apples in brown sugar.
I am shocked by all the bad reviews of this whisky and I can only assume it is because they aren't used to the unique character of this particular distillery. I guess strong character can evoke strong reactions whether they be positive or negative. I love everything about Loch Lomond ( the distillery and the national park). They make amazingly characterful whiskies of all varieties without the use of color or chill filtration and best of all they are actually reasonably priced. I am actually a fan of the Loch Lomond original which is lower abv but for $5 more I would buy this everytime. I know this comes from the Highlands but it has that Campbeltown character I absolutely love. Oily mouthfeel, hint of sea salt, orchard fruits like apples and even a hint of peach, a whiff of peat smoke weaves its way through in the background, really remarkable stuff for the price I have paid more than double for whiskies that were this good. Buy this while you can because sadly there's no whisky like this at this price point.I have yet to have any whisky from these guys that I didn't immediately love(and I have had quite a few) keep up the good work Loch Lomond you really know what you're doing. Cheers! The Sugarbear
This is a fabulous whisky! It is instantly smooth, cherries, light smoke, slightly oily, opening up to a soft pepper, vanilla, dried fruit and a closing Christmas pudding & baked pears. I'm on my 5th bottle now as it's one of my favourite everyday drams. Of the 70+ other bottles I have on my shelves to select from, this puts a smile on my face every time.
