For the Laphroaig Oak Select, the Islay distillery has taken whisky from a number of different types of cask, including oloroso sherry butts, white American oak, Pedro Ximenez seasoned hoggies, quarter casks, and first-fill bourbon casks. Quite a selection, wouldn't you say? A laid-back addition to the Laphroaig core range of single malts.
Classic, medicinal peat notes up front, supported by citrus-y, chocolate-y sweet notes and soft barley.
The peat is there, but it's taking it easy and letting the bright notes of lemon, green apples and mint stand out. Darker baking spice notes develop further on.
Medium length, peat remaining in sight until it's over.
It doesn't pack a huge punch of peat, which might be just the ticket for introducing someone to the wonders of Islay's smoky expressions.
Noticed a few poor reviews of the oak select, just felt the need to come to it's defence. I was gifted a bottle a few years back and feared the worst as I'd read these reviews. Guess what, I thoroughly enjoyed it, and has now become a regular buy for me. Yeah, it's not the 10, but so what? Take it on its own merits, it's a very decent drop for the money. An easy drinker...and there's nothing wrong about that.
I'm a massive lover of the malts of Islay, but this is the exception... My first ever Islay was Laphroaig and after the first few sips I was hooked, but this stiff could turn me off the brand entirely if it were not for the other excellent offerings they produce.... Too many corners cut in the name of profit....young, thin, no depth of flavour, lack of smoke, insipid & virtually no finish..... You can see why they rebranded from Select to Oak Select because Select was s badly received !!
A discovery this Hogmanay! A fabulous malt at a good price. God help me, I found it on Sainsbury's but don't you you let that put you off. I am sold on this!
I read some positive reviews and decided to try. I'm very disapointed, maybe I expected too much, but this is bad. The worst Laphroiag I've ever tasted.
After reading the whinging, whining of supposed whisky drinkers, I've had to come to Laphroaig's defence. Yes it does have the wonderful, medicinal hit that true whisky drinkers love, but it also has a lovely mellow linger on the tongue of honey. Stop crying about it all you out there moaning about the very thing that makes Laphroaig unique and write a song about how much you love milk!!!!
