    Laphroaig Oak Select

For the Laphroaig Oak Select, the Islay distillery has taken whisky from a number of different types of cask, including oloroso sherry butts, white American oak, Pedro Ximenez seasoned hoggies, quarter casks, and first-fill bourbon casks. Quite a selection, wouldn't you say? A laid-back addition to the Laphroaig core range of single malts.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

    Nose

Classic, medicinal peat notes up front, supported by citrus-y, chocolate-y sweet notes and soft barley.

    Palate

The peat is there, but it's taking it easy and letting the bright notes of lemon, green apples and mint stand out. Darker baking spice notes develop further on.

    Finish

Medium length, peat remaining in sight until it's over.

    Overall

It doesn't pack a huge punch of peat, which might be just the ticket for introducing someone to the wonders of Islay's smoky expressions.

    Terrible

Spend an extra tenner on a real Laphroaig. Lacks peat, punch and is wholly disappointing. Would prefer a Bowmore which is going some

    It's definitely a Laphroaig Jim...

I am a long term Laphroaig fan who is perfectly happy to drink the no age statement Oak Select, which can usually be found heavily discounted. It is a bona fide Laphroaig albeit with some characteristics dialled down and other flavours introduced. Not as full-on smoky, medicine cabinet, seaweed (though those elements are there) but with apple peel and lemon rind. If you don't like Southern Islay malts then you won't like this. If you do, then I find this an enjoyable mid-week whisky that won't stress your pension. It's a 4.1 for me.

    Pretty decent

Noticed a few poor reviews of the oak select, just felt the need to come to it's defence. I was gifted a bottle a few years back and feared the worst as I'd read these reviews. Guess what, I thoroughly enjoyed it, and has now become a regular buy for me. Yeah, it's not the 10, but so what? Take it on its own merits, it's a very decent drop for the money. An easy drinker...and there's nothing wrong about that.

    Simply awful Islay

I'm a massive lover of the malts of Islay, but this is the exception... My first ever Islay was Laphroaig and after the first few sips I was hooked, but this stiff could turn me off the brand entirely if it were not for the other excellent offerings they produce.... Too many corners cut in the name of profit....young, thin, no depth of flavour, lack of smoke, insipid & virtually no finish..... You can see why they rebranded from Select to Oak Select because Select was s badly received !!

    A discovery this Hogmanay!

A discovery this Hogmanay! A fabulous malt at a good price. God help me, I found it on Sainsbury's but don't you you let that put you off. I am sold on this!
