    Laphroaig Oak Select

For the Laphroaig Oak Select, the Islay distillery has taken whisky from a number of different types of cask, including oloroso sherry butts, white American oak, Pedro Ximenez seasoned hoggies, quarter casks, and first-fill bourbon casks. Quite a selection, wouldn't you say? A laid-back addition to the Laphroaig core range of single malts.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

    Nose

Classic, medicinal peat notes up front, supported by citrus-y, chocolate-y sweet notes and soft barley.

    Palate

The peat is there, but it's taking it easy and letting the bright notes of lemon, green apples and mint stand out. Darker baking spice notes develop further on.

    Finish

Medium length, peat remaining in sight until it's over.

    Overall

It doesn't pack a huge punch of peat, which might be just the ticket for introducing someone to the wonders of Islay's smoky expressions.

*Laphroaig Select* - Ok if you're used to Laphroaig

Classic Laphroaig on the nose. People can smell it from a mile away. Lot of peat, salty air and slight underlying sweetness. Smoky and sweet on the palate, but 'concoction' would be the word to describe it rather than 'complexity'. The peat will linger during and after the finish. Wouldn't call this a failure, but getting a Laphroaig 10 for the few extra quids will improve the experience significantly.

    Fair deal for it's price

I was hesitant for a long time about buying this bottle due to its negative reviews. A friend of mine told me he has been drinking the "Select" for years and I decided to give it a try. I have to say that for it's price (bought recently for 27£) it's an absolutely fine everyday whisky. In my opinion we should rate a whisky by its price tag. After trying the "10 year old Cask Strength, Batch 15", the "Lore" and the "Quarter Cask", this is not an exceptional whisky, but definitely worth it a try!

much too smoky and quite undrinkable

I was looking forward to a nice glass after a long day in the garden. Unfortunately I think I might as well be drinking a bonfire and now can't erase the taste. Yukky as my grandkids would say

    Cooking whisky.

Highly disappointing. Bland and tasteless, I don't know what Laphroaig are thinking here. The first single malt in a long time going for cooking or cocktails. AVOID.

Big Laphroaig fan but yuk this is horrible

There are very few whiskies i don't like but this is one. Even at £30 a bottle you would have to say its poor value for money
