Single Malt
You don't see much single malt from Knockando these days, so it's always exciting to see an indie bottling from the distillery arrive here at MoM Towers. This one was distilled by Knockando in December 2007 and aged in two hogshead casks for 13 years, before being bottled up in March 2021 for Signatory's Un-Chillfiltered Collection.
Candied peels and banana chips, with a touch of anise lingering.
Brown sugar and honey dominate the palate, with a good core of warming oak underneath.
Vanilla tablet and flaky croissant.
I'll start by saying that this is a perfectly drinkable whisky and as the tasting notes suggest it is smooth and sweet. That said, it's a very ordinary dram. It could come from any Speyside distillery and despite being 46% and nonchillfiltered, I found it to be rather thin and wishy-washy. It's my own fault, really. I decided a while ago not to buy any more Signatory Unchillfitered Collection whiskies from hogsheads because I found them all a bit samey - as if Signatory take the spirit from distilleries and put them in distinctly average casks which contribute very little to the end product. So, I'll finish this bottle of Knockando (eventually) and try not to be tempted again. Instead I'll stick to the Carn Mor and James Eadie bottlings which tend to have far more character.
