Jameson Caskmates is an intriguing release. Having sent some of their casks to the local craft stout brewers at Franciscan Well, the casks were returned to Midleton where they were subsequently used to give a stout finish to Jameson!
We tasted it before it was available in the UK when we visited Cork just before St. Patrick's Day 2015, and we know that some of the fine folk at Irish Distillers were worried that it may be seen as a bit of a gimmick. Perhaps to an extent it is, but more importantly, it works - a worthwhile experiment that's produced a unique and interesting Irish whiskey.
There's still cut grass and some fruit alongside delicious oily pot still character, but things are different here too. Is it sweeter? A different sweetness perhaps, more wood spice plus chocolate liqueur. A shift of emphasis.
Orchard fruits, great mouthfeel but the vanilla cream is less prominent, it's more fragrant (hoppy?) and floral on the palate with a touch of bitterness.
Again familiar, but different, that different complexion of spice with chocolate from the nose lingers briefly.
An interesting twist on an old favourite, and a great gift for Irish whiskey and stout fans alike!
I can appriciate this whiskey for what it is, i do like how this whiskey came about, but if your like me and do not like stout, i would advise you stay away, if do do like stout, maybe give it a go.
Tried it yesterday.it was amazing.lovely smooth taste to it must try and find who sells it as had it in my local pub
This is an orgy of flavors! I picked up a bot from a local duty free, having never bought a Jameson before, I thought it'd be a good gift and would save me giving away a bottle of my single malt scotch collection when required. So having been on a long detox lasting 3 whole days, my resolve is starting to give hints of fatigue. As I lit a cigar, I got tempted to crack open the Jameson and sneak a try...Its incredibly peaty and smokey and your cant even take a proper whiff. Few attempts later, after my sinuses have been cleared with the intense peat fumes, my long nose is able to find an entire orchard in the glass. Its much too confusing I thought and took a sip to try and break apart the flavors. Complexities continue, but less peaty, a cocktail of fruits, white chocolate and coffee. The taste remains the palette past the short smooth finish. Its complex, confusing, exciting, above all its mouth watering and you're left longing for another round.
creamy, coffee, cocoa, with long finish wish it has higher ABV
Just bought a bottle, going back for a case before it sells out. If you like your whisk(e)y smooth, rich, a little sweet, with strong notes of chocolate, aniseed, raises and plums, don't hesitate, buy it now before it's too late. I hope this becomes a regular member of the Jameson stable. Unbelievably good value.
