    Jameson Caskmates Stout Edition

Jameson Caskmates is an intriguing release. Having sent some of their casks to the local craft stout brewers at Franciscan Well, the casks were returned to Midleton where they were subsequently used to give a stout finish to Jameson!

We tasted it before it was available in the UK when we visited Cork just before St. Patrick's Day 2015, and we know that some of the fine folk at Irish Distillers were worried that it may be seen as a bit of a gimmick. Perhaps to an extent it is, but more importantly, it works - a worthwhile experiment that's produced a unique and interesting Irish whiskey.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

    Nose

There's still cut grass and some fruit alongside delicious oily pot still character, but things are different here too. Is it sweeter? A different sweetness perhaps, more wood spice plus chocolate liqueur. A shift of emphasis.

    Palate

Orchard fruits, great mouthfeel but the vanilla cream is less prominent, it's more fragrant (hoppy?) and floral on the palate with a touch of bitterness.

    Finish

Again familiar, but different, that different complexion of spice with chocolate from the nose lingers briefly.

    Overall

An interesting twist on an old favourite, and a great gift for Irish whiskey and stout fans alike!

My new sipper if it hangs around long enough.

I can say that in 30+ yrs of drinking whisk(e)y I've finished more bottles of Jameson whisky than any other brand. When this bottling came out I was a little skeptical as to how good it would be. Well eventually I caved in through curiosity and purchased a bottle and I'm pleased that I did. I love the citrus profile of Jamesons but this pairing proves how good the basic spirit is as it totally changed in a great way. I will defo be purchasing more, 5*.

    Drunk review

The Budweiser of whiskey. Bland no finish . Blackbush, Yellowspot, redbreast. Nuff said (yes I had several whiskeys before writing this)

    Doesn't work - more of a gimmick

In my opinion, they were right to be concerned about this being a "gimmick", rather than an attempt to make a great whiskey. Where Glenfiddich have succeeded (with their "IPA" release), Jameson have completely failed. The flavour combination just doesn't work for me - it adds almost a bitterness to the whiskey which clashes with the signature Jameson smoothness. Great marketing idea, poor execution

    Unique and unique

Fantastic. It smells and taste are delightful. Yes, I'm using the word 'delightful' for a whiskey. The stout notes are detectible, but not overpowering. The finish complements the already wonderful Jameson product.

    A fulsom flavour

A lovely bottle of whiskey to which I saw then purchased in Budapest in duty free. I'd buy again.
