Heaven Hill. If bourbon is your thing, that's a name you should be very familiar with. If you're unfamiliar, we recommend you become acquainted with the legendary Kentucky-based producer and its wares - which includes this good value-for-money expression. tasty sipped neat, and will be great for any whiskey-based cocktails you could throw at it. Or throw it at. Maybe don't do any throwing. Throwing generally isn't great for cocktail making unless you're one of those bartenders that does somersaults.
Rye-rich, quite spicy and sweet.
Spices, oak, cedar, a little rum-like character develops.
Fruity, dark brown sugar.
THAT is way fair (giving it five stars)....it really blows away bourbons that are double the price....it's unique for such a young rascal. Sweet, notes of pecan and peanuts. cotton candy and earth. it should cost about $25+...
I pay about 690 baht (£13 GBP) for ONE LITRE bottle of this in Bangkok so it's become my day to day staple bourbon. Other than Benchmark which is also similarly priced here, all of the other 'big brand label' bourbons which are more well known (and all Scottish malt) cost about x2 to x3 what they do in the UK...same goes for wine out here.. With such excellent value it serves to remind me of the taste of whisky and is a fair enough evening nightcap, and good with beer/chaser. Also most Thai girls don't like neat bourbon or malt, preferring Chivas or Red Label with mixers at best so I get to drink almost all of it myself..
and it's a good pedigree. after having broadened my palate and gotten more experience, i came back to this after having thought it way too young and vegetal/oily....this (new packaged) version is really a solid pour for the price. HH's lower shelf is still very mid-shelf. definitely recommended.
Yes, it's on the cheap side, especially in the US. A good choice for ten bucks. Smooth taste, no hangover - a working man's drink to finish off the day or the week.
I like to think of it as a poor man's Jim Beam. It works for me. Sip on ice and enjoy.
