    Grant's Triple Wood

As you might expect from the name, Grant's Triple Wood features whisky drawn from three types of cask - specifically refill American oak casks, first-fill ex-bourbon casks and virgin American oak casks. An approachable blended Scotch whisky from the world-famous brand, taking the place of the Family Reserve as its flagship expression.

Good to better than a lot of blends

I like it as an everyday whisky. On Sunday afternoons I Like a peatier single malt. 50 years ago my first scotch was Grants. Fell away from it as my local liquor stores quit selling it. It’s back on the shelf as triple wood. I’d recommend it to anyone who drinks a blend

Needs water before the depth of flavour is apparent

This was on offer in Tesco at £12.00 a bottle, (equivalent to their lowest priced value brand), so how could I not! (3 bottles). An unremarkable blended but opened up with a generous splash of water there is a depth and complexity of flavour; Spiced fruitcake predominates with a finish reminiscent of McCowan's Highland Toffee. Gets an extra point for being on offer.

Unfortunate drop. Nearly makes it, then doesn't.

Honey, vanilla and banana on the tongue. Heavy caramel finish. The start and middle really is absolutely delicious. It reminds me of Aldi's Highland Black 8. The finish really is a disappointment, and pretty much makes me not want to finish the dram. On both the nose and in the finish you can taste that there is a lot of young whisky involved. Almost as if it is 1/2 green! The finish is a lingering bite of methylated spirits, combined with fresh cut grass and cigarette ash. I've never tasted either of those three but that's what's left on my tongue anyhow :( Now I'm getting a lingering burnt toffee. Into the oak barrel unfortunately. I don't want to bag Grants, but you're getting less than you pay for with this one.
