Heroes & Heretics
Scotland
Single Malt
Well-sherried single malt from Glentauchers, bottled up by Heroes & Heretics under The Falls of Caledonia name (with a particularly dramatic-looking label). It was distilled in September 2014 and allowed to age in a sherry hogshead for six years, until it was bottled in August 2021 at cask strength, with only 230 bottles produced.
Treacle, honeycomb, cinnamon, and Medjool dates.
Still got plenty of dried fruit notes and toasty spices, now with a meaty malt savoury hint at its core.
Oily hops and red berries.
Just opened a bottle of this, as it was featured as whisky of the year 2021 by no nonsense whisky on YouTube. I can't stress what an individual bottle this whisky is, Fantastic deep natural colour, good legs, but not overly so. Nose is burnt fruit like a toasted banana, with a bit of coconut, even, to balance the heaviness. Sweet dark puddings come to mind. The taste is initially a molasses hit, and then softens to those dark fruits again, figs, dates, or raisins/ sultanas. Great mouth feel and not overly Al oholic, despite a generous cask strength. The finish is peppery , perhaps with smoky bacon hiding in there, and lasts a good while, u like some offerings. I am decidedly leaning towards independent bottlers this year, and want to try and give the smaller outfits a good hearing. All I can say is that thisis a perfect t whisky for me, strong, flavourful, realistically priced. Try it! If you don't like it, send it to me......
