Glenmorangie Barrel Select Release 13 Year Old Cognac Cask Finish

Unveiled in August 2021, this expression from the Glenmorangie Distillery brings together the fruit-forward fabulousness of Glenmorangie's single malt with the rich, spicy depth imparted by Cognac casks! Glenmorangie’s head of whisky creation Dr. Bill Lumsden had experimented with Cognac casks before, but found they would overshadow the spirit's character. For this expression, however, Dr. Bill used Cognac casks that had been filled several times, resulting in a more subtle wood influence on the whisky. It was initially aged in ex-bourbon casks for eight years, before being finished in the aforenoted Cognac casks for a further four years, and then bottled up at 46% ABV.

    Finish

Lingering oaky spices and a touch of red fruit sweetness.

    Next level Glenmorangie

This is a bright, fruity Glenmorangie. It's a really nice dram that the distillery should consider adding to their standard range if they can source the casks required to achieve this result on a regular basis. The oak maturation is still fully apparent, but the cognac finish makes it bloom. While it isn't hugely complex, it's really nice!

    Crisp and dry

The first thing that hits on the nose on this paler than regular Glenmorangie is crisp apple notes with white grapes. There's a huge whack of barrel oak along with some spice and a hint of tobacco or antique furniture. The taste continues that crisp grape note, but there's also a strong orange and pineapple coming through from the distillery spirit character. There's a lovely shortbread taste as well, alongside some cinnamon and some black pepper spice. The finish is long, the spiced apple mixing with vanilla fudge and has a very dry end, like a crisp white wine. A very interesting marriage at work here, and another excellent dram from Glenmorangie.
