    Glenmorangie A Tale of Cake

Dr. Bill Lumsden (Glenmorangie’s director of whisky creation) was recently musing on how some of his most joyful memories involved cake, which inspired the good doctor to make a whisky evoking those cake-filled moments! Glenmorangie's A Tale of Cake was initially matured in bourbon casks, before being moved over to Tokaji wine casks to help develop those yummy cakey notes. The result is an expression packed to the brim with vanilla and fruit notes, as well as depth and complexity.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

    Nose

There’s plenty of classic Glenmorangie goodness here, orchard fruits, acacia honey and creamy vanilla initially, followed by stewed orange, golden sultanas and a little Amalfi lemon. Then there’s white chocolate and crème brûlee with hints of elderflower, a fresh wholemeal loaf and a little mint among an array of fruity elements like nectarines in syrup, dried mango and apricot yoghurt.

    Palate

The palate is complex, tart and has some slightly tannic wood notes which cut through flinty minerality tones as well as tinned peaches, orange chocolate, apricot croissant and more vanilla. There are honey roasted almonds and a little dark fruit underneath.

    Finish

The finish lingers for an age with notes of marmalade, honeycomb and some fresh pear.

Great, sweet dram for a Sunday afternoon

Fantastic expression and dare I say better than the sauternes cask finish. Biggest complaint would be the slight tannin palate that lingers in the finish

    Odd choice

Strange one this. For an inflated price I was expecting something with a deeper taste profile, and more of a wow factor. It’s perfectly pleasant, light and smooth, but I don’t get too much of the usual Glenmorangie taste. Pineapple and sugary nose, light fruit and some “cake” type type, and not a particularly lingering finish. It’s ok, perfectly accept and highly drinkable, but not quite living up to the marketing hype and the inflated price. Not a keeper, but not a regret either,

    A weak recipe

I bought this thinking it would match a mid winters dram, actually better it considering it’s double the price. Very disappointed. No depth, lacks richness, a complete washout. I honestly wish I hadn’t opened it. Good for auction, not drinking.

    Dessert in a glass.

Maybe a bit too sweet for some, but if you want something that is incredibly easy to drink and never gets old then this could be the dram for you. Absolutely inspired finishing in a cask seasoned with Hungarian dessert wine. Tokaji is an incredibly sweet wine and the gentle nature of Glenmorangie compliments it well. The only disappointment for me was the slight tannic note which doesn’t really belong here; I can’t help feeling as if it could have benefited from staying in the Tokaji casks for another few months, but then I have a sweet tooth!
