    Glengoyne 21 Year Old

A fabulously sherried single malt from Glengoyne, matured predominantly in first fill European oak sherry casks for 21 long years. Its time in the cask has bestowed upon it lovely rich fruity notes with an exceptionally long finish. This fantastic whisky was winner of a Double Gold medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2018. Impressive stuff.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

    Nose

Punchy oak, potpourri, cranberries, raspberries, a little malt and figs on the nose.

    Palate

Richly sherried. Everything is tangy and spiced - molasses, hot apple cider, Christmas pudding with flaming brandy and a touch of cracked black peppercorns.

    Finish

Ends with Oloroso and sweet malt.

    Very good, but in decline?

This is a lovely whisky, no doubt. But I'm still haunted by that traumatic episode in my life when the price jumped by £30 overnight. It also feels less punchy, less substantive now then it did a few years ago. Is it still value for money? Arguably not. Are there better 21 year old sherried drams out there at this price ? Possibly.

    Slightly underdone!

A very good dram by any stretch of the imagination. What didn't quite work for me (and not that it has to!) is that I felt that the spirit was lacking depth of flavor. Sure the strength was fine and the aroma was magnificent. I think it comes down to the quality of the barley. There was a distinct lack of "maltiness" that should be the defining character of this distillate. I understand that agriculture changes and hence, so do the by-products but, increase it to 46% (un-chill-filtered) please and then we can have another beast altogether to appraise.

    Not as good as hoped

I was expecting a lot but unfortunately didn't find it. A bit too subtle for my liking. Pleasant and would definately enjoy again but if you're looking for rich sherried I think I've been spoilt by GlenDronach 18 Year Old Allardice. Now I've tried it everything else comes up short against to the Allardice.

    Didn't live up to expectations

I feel harsh giving this 2.5 stars, only because I'm aware that it might not suit my palate so hard to tell whether it's genuinely bad or I just don't like it. Tried so hard to like it every time I poured another glass, but every time i was dissapointed and left wanting more. Balvenie 17 is a far better whisky for a lot less money, but i guess it depends what you like. This is a very rich whisky, which i usually like. It has a strong vibe of Christmas pudding and marzipan, which I don't like. It also has a strong alcoholic nose and taste. If this sounds like your thing then go for it, you might just love it, definitely not a boring whisky. Personally I'd go for Oban 14 or Balvenie 12 or 17 every time.

    Delicious......enjoyed experience

Too good for me! I bought this on the basis of all the great reviews. I've got to say it was different than i was expecting, although I just think my palate isn't advanced enough to detect all of the flavours. It is quite strong out of the bottle, add a drop of water and it brings out the flavours better. Very rich and chocolatey, think of rich xmas cake and winter spices. I wouldn't buy again at the price of £150 but there is no doubt it's one hell of a whiskey!
