We've seen the Revival and the Evolution, and now Glenglassaugh are adding a peated expression to their range. The Torfa (which refers to the Old Norse word for turf or peat) has been matured in ex-bourbon barrels and weighs in at 20 PPM. We love to see that Glenglassaugh is back up and running again after being closed for over 20 years, and they've even got enough momentum to try new things, as this is their first peated single malt Scotch whisky!

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose

Smoke and citrus in equal measures, with sweet spice happily sitting between the two.

Palate

Not overtly smoky. It's definitely got its coastal elements, but the fruity notes of melon, apple and yet more citrus make it a rather sweet dram, balanced by warming barley.

Finish

Smoke lasts to the end.

Overall

A good introduction to peated whisky for those looking to get a taste of smoky goodness.

Good

Previously had tasted the evolution, which I enjoyed. This was very good and I'm always interested when not all peat distilleries make peated versions. This is very good. Subtle peat level with floral overall palate. Nice one

Move over Famous Grouse, we have a new contender here.

Astoundingly young, newmake-y. I cannot believe this is being bottled and sold as a serious product, ha ha. Absolutely zero to offer - will not bother scoring this. Eagerly anticipating older expressions from the distillery.

Great value, worth a try!

Excellent whisky at this price. Not overly smoky, great bottling strength allowing the addition of water if wanted, and no added colour. The NAS doesn't really matter to me as it doesn't have the burn of a very young whisky. Can't see a statement about chill filtering though- a bit of an omission these days.

Full of flavour with a lovely finish

Bourbon cask sweetness and just a hint of peat smoke, this is a cracking dram. NAS but bottled at a rip roaring 50% abv you get a lot of bang for your buck, especially when it is on sale. Quite a delicate nose, but full of flavour with a lovely finish. Fill your boots while it's on offer.

What has happened to Torfa?

I reviewed this whisky back in December 2018. Then, I was very impressed and gave it a very positive review. However, the bottle I opened this week is nothing like the previous whisky! It's not a bad whisky - it's just not what it was. Disappointing.
