Glenfiddich
Scotland
Single Malt
Released for the Glenfiddich's Travel Retail Age of Discovery series, this is a 19 year old single malt Scotch whisky which has been treated to a red wine cask finish. It was created to commemorate the 1831 voyage of the HMS Beagle, which travelled to South America so Charles Darwin could collect fossils, helping him with his theory of evolution.

It is soft and sharp lovable Whisky.
I have a bottle of this and have to say it's quite good. This is top end of my budget and I am glad I bought it. It's complex yet light, can't wait to have some with my father to see what he thinks.
Extremely rich dark fruit nose, raspberries and black currants, but a tad spirity. Add 5 drops of distiller water and let it sit for a few minutes and the bouquet opens up to chocolate cherry syrup and oak. Swirl it, let it sit a little longer and vanilla and berries come up. On the palate its stewed fruits, dates, raisins, plums and a touch of malt and some dryness. Finish is medium, satisfying with a slight bitterness. If I had to compare this, the closest expression would be Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban. I was fortunate to come across one of these bottles before they sold out. Wonderful.
We have hosted a SMS tasting each year for about 15 years and tasted over 80 scotches. Many of the same people come each year. In 2014, we were lucky enough to include a bottle of Glenfiddich 19 Year Old - Age of Discovery Red Wine Cask Finish. I say all this to let you know that this is not only my opinion, but was unanimous in a group of about 20 scotch drinkers. This was simply the best scotch we had ever sampled. Smooth and flavorful. The only negative I can give is that we cannot find it anywhere. We have since tried the Bourbon Cask finish and while it is also quite good, it does not compare.
