“I'm a fan of both islay peated (ardbeg, lagavulin, laphroig), and also sherry cask scotch's (especially the glendronach departed 15yo revival), so thought would check this out, but have to say that trying to have a foot in both camps doesn't really cut it, for myself at least. it's pleasant enough don't get me wrong, but not a scotch I instantly reach for among my numerous bottles”

This expression was initially matured in bourbon casks before being transferred over to Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez Sherry casks, so it maintains some of the classic GlenDronach sherried "oomph", but with rich, smoky elements at its core. Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose

Wafts of juicy (and maybe even a little tropical) fruit and vanilla cream mingle with plumes of charred oak.

Palate

Cinnamon and more wood-smoke lead to runny honey and dried raisin further on.

Finish

Golden barley shines through here.

Interesting whisky from an excellent distillery

I love Glendronach. They make some of my favorite sherried whisky so when I saw this at a local gas station for $40 I was surprised and intrigued so I bought it of course. Looks like there may have been some color added to this definitely a little orange and the nose is very young/fumey but it's actually a surprisingly smooth whisky. Nice sweet sherry oak, vanilla, and cinnamon with a nice peaty/smoky finish. Really good stuff I feel like I got a good deal on this one. Cheers! The Sugarbear

Good unless you expect it to be what it isn't

I tried this keeping in mind that it would be neither a typical Glendronach nor an Islay whisky, and I have to say I really like it! Nice peaty punch but with little of the metallic harshness as can be found in some peated NAS whiskies, a good chewy mouthfeel, peppery but far in the back of the mouth. Glendronach excels again, just in a different way than usual.

one plus one isn't always two

Thaught it would be interesting to have usual GlenDronach with Islay-type peat but... It was peaty but i missed usual full bodied and long lasting sweetness. Of course, it has no age statement. 12 - 15 years in "right" casks could make it better and more exciting, surely. At the moment - and at the first glance - it is neither sweet nor (heavily) peated.

At this price it is very good value if you want to have your whisky both ways - peaty and sherried - this is why I am giving it 8/10. Don't get me wrong, it is an interesting whisky. But, if you think you are saving yourself some money instead of buying a whisky that truly does it both ways, like Ardbeg's Uidegail or Talisker's Amoroso Cask finish, you'd better spend an extra 20 or so pounds. This is whisky is simply too young to fulfill the total depths of flavours on both ends of the scale. Still, Glendronach should be applauded for bringing something like this at this price bracket!
