The flagship Glen Moray from the distillery's age statement Elgin Heritage range. Unlike many of their releases, there is no finish or unusual casks used here, instead this 12 year old is aged exclusively in American oak casks. A pleasing and affordable Speyside single malt.
Crisp green apple skin, rhubarb boiled sweets, buttery shortbread, with subtly herbaceous oak developing.
Chewy barley with a drizzle of syrup, a touch of apricot and crushed honey-roasted nuts.
White chocolate and oak.
It is a very average Whisky, with little substance to deserve a high rating.
As a noob I compared this to Chivas Regal 12 which is almost the same price in my country, this made chivas smell and taste like jet fuel. I loved this one!
Typical Speyside, reminds me of Benriach, maybe Glencadam. Vanilla, heather, syrup, apple, touch of oak on the nose. Palate is simpler: vanille, white chocolate, spiciness. First pour was smooth. Quickly becomes harsh under the influence of oxygen. Definitely less tasty now bottle is at 2/3rds. Would have been tastier at 46%, but then again probably wouldn't have added it to my order with a 15% bump in price.
My first taste of Glen Moray was a very nice surprise at a very good price. Sweetness with a variety of flavors throughout, and smooth enough to enjoy without ice and holds up nicely with ice. Either way I liked this 12-year old!
No professional review here, just a scotch lover saying that this will be in my cabinet as a staple from here on out.
