Four Roses Small Batch is a step up from the classic Four Roses Bourbon, showcasing the variety of mashbills that the distillers have to work within Lawrenceburg - and their talents at making them sing together. Ten bourbon recipes are produced by Four Roses, and four of them are blended to create this approachable but flavoursome expression. Great value-for-money stuff, this.
The nose is quite subtle and smooth, there are notes of winter spice and buttered granary toast with thick honey. There are hints of cut flowers and dry hay.
The palate is much fuller with a lovely balance. There are notes of manuka honey, winter spice, toasty oak, a little crème anglaise and thick fruit.
The finish is of good length with a resurgence from the crème anglaise.
Scotch and occasionally rye drinker. I bought this just to make a batch cocktail - so looked for something cheap-ish, drinkable on its own but not overpowering. Tasting neat confirmed this fit the bill. It has a nice crisp flavour, not excessively sweet like Bulleit, not quite as as rye-influenced as Woodford Reserve. Hay, corn, drying spice and a wisp of caramel - same ball park as Toki (which is slightly more to my taste). Nothing spectacular in terms of body or aroma but easy to drink on the rocks. Overall, solid for the price.
Up until now my favourite bourbon was Eagle Rare 10yo but was recommended this by an American we became friendly with on Holiday and it didn’t disappoint
I'm not normally a Bourbon drinker preferring Scotch to that weird stuff with an "e" at the end but this one (Four Roses Small Batch) upsets that idea in one fell swoop - like a lot of things it won't be to everybodies taste, but me I like it! Sweet but strong and interesting! Looks like I will be investigating more of this Bourbon stuff!
This is just lovely for me spicy . Rich flavor. With just a little Drama on the end . Perfect sipping neat . No high ball required. ??
Light and sweet, this is an easy sip that you wont feel guilty about drinking.
