The amazing 30 year old Fettercairn from their redesigned range. It was distilled in 1978 and has a lot of thick Oloroso sherry notes coming through. Just delicious stuff, and it looks great too!
Beeswax and dried herbs, some toffee apple, and a hint of fresh peppermint leaf. Cedar, cigar leaves and butterscotch.
Pine resin, beeswax and thick barley malt. Spiciness from cinnamon, toasty oak and a touch of something rubbery.
Good length with more of those pine-y, resinous notes, potpourri and honey.
Still noticing the finish. After posting, a few of those "rubbery" notes came out. Hmmm. Don't like "rubbery" as a description. They're tastier than that.
Murray gave this a 78 in his latest bible (2013), but I don't get it. I don't pick up all the notes off the nose that the Chaps at the Master of Malt do, but I get the toffee apple, the peppermint hint, also some cereal. The taste is excellent, flavorful, complex. Pine resin? I don't think I would like pine resin, but it doesn't matter because I didn't detect any. Chaps might have mentioned a little of that toffee goodness which seems to accompany a lot of well-aged whiskies. The finish is also delightfully complex---and long. Spiciness. Honeyed. More toffee. This is good stuff. What didn't you like Mr Murray?
