Craigellachie
Scotland
Single Malt
It used to be a rather rare sight to see an official bottling of Craigellachie single malt. Well after years of waiting, in 2014, four turned up all at once! The 17 year old expression really shows off the meatiness of this Speysider's spirit - top stuff.
Apple crumble, melon and raisins. Honey'd barley, a little hint of smoke and vanilla ice-cream.
It opens very sweet with pineapple and custard creams, though the meatiness soon shines through. More smoke on the palate than the nose, with a touch of clove and oak.
Waxy and smoky on the finish.
Wow this is the best whisky I've had for some time, even those similarly priced. It's so bright, cirtussy and vibrant. Also very oily mouth feel. I get apples, cut grass, jasmine, lillies, and lemmon drizzle cake. What a combo! Strange! As often happens on first opening, it was OK, and I opened a bottle of 30 quid Hinch irish that seemed better, but the next day I went back and was blown away. Shame its sold out!
Very impressed, just supped 2 sample bottles, thinking of purchasing a full bottle.
Craigellachie really is an underrated distillery. The 17 is another fantastic dram. Different from the 13, more rich and fruit and with less sulphur. Needs time to breath like any good whisky. Prices seem to be dropping too. 'Where positive anticipation crumbles' what a strange review, tasting notes seem to be from a different whisky
Recommended to me by MoM. Absolutely delighted with this- the perfect mixture of toffee sweet intensity and mineral complexity that I like. Loads going on in this dram. Highly recommended. (for ref. I also love Springbank, HP and Arran, among others)
A little of smoke and malty. After 5 mins the melon and floral flavor come out (I can imagine this aroma is given by the aromatic compound called Beta Damascone). Taste waxy and smoky. A little of hay and grass on the finish.
