    Connemara Peated

Arguably the most important peated Irish whiskey, Connemara was the first in the modern era of renaissance to remind folks that Irish whiskey can be smoky. In fact, it often was, and Connemara Peated Whiskey is inspired by the whiskies that would have been made over the centuries in Ireland in areas like the one that gives the expression its name. Turf (as the Irish often call peat) was what was available to the early whiskey makers, so prior to the 20th century, peated whiskey was commonplace in Ireland. Connemara whiskey is produced at the famous Cooley Distillery and has a distinct but still delicate smokiness, balanced by a smooth texture and sweet taste. This profile has been highly decorated, receiving over 20 medals from major spirits competitions since 2012.

As described, a peated Irish whiskey!

I've been eyeing this for a while as I love Irish whiskey and I love peated Islays, so this seemed like a perfect concept, though having read a number of reviews on here I had lowered my expectations. Having finally taken the plunge, I can say that I am very happy I did, it's basically just what I had originally hoped. I give it 4 rather than 5 stars as I do agree with some of the other reviewers that it is a touch thin, which is a shame as with just a little more to it I think it could have been a perfect 5. That said, it is as described. But despite the nod to the Islays, for me this is very much first and foremost an Irish whiskey (with some peat), rather than being like a true Islay whisky that happens to have been made in Ireland. So I think probably the Irish whiskey fan will get more joy from this than an Islay purist.

    Respectable Irish Malt

This is a whiskey that cannot decide whether it is a scotch malt or an Irish malt. Not as good as some of the Islays like Ardbeg and Lagavulin but respectable. Quite well balanced, somewhat smooth but ultimately it struggles to find its place as a favourite in my collection. Good as a sipping whiskey when I don't particularly want something special.

    Sweet peat

Excellent value for the price. This is a sweet peat whisky, a great intro into smokier whiskies.

    Soft, peaty, not too challenging

Love it. Not too heavy, very smooth with enough peat to keep you interested. Perfect for an introduction to peat, or for a gentle Sunday evening sip.

Great Intro to Smokey Peaty Whisky

Light, clean, slightly peated Irish. Very drinkable. If you want to dabble in the peat side of whisky, let this gem be your introduction. Lagavullin, Talisker and Laphroaig are all lovely but may be too strong for your first few smokey, peaty adventures.
