Arguably the most important peated Irish whiskey, Connemara was the first in the modern era of renaissance to remind folks that Irish whiskey can be smoky. In fact, it often was, and Connemara Peated Whiskey is inspired by the whiskies that would have been made over the centuries in Ireland in areas like the one that gives the expression its name. Turf (as the Irish often call peat) was what was available to the early whiskey makers, so prior to the 20th century, peated whiskey was commonplace in Ireland. Connemara whiskey is produced at the famous Cooley Distillery and has a distinct but still delicate smokiness, balanced by a smooth texture and sweet taste. This profile has been highly decorated, receiving over 20 medals from major spirits competitions since 2012.
Well-smoked and peated, heather freshness and floral notes with a honeyed sweetness and a little wood.
Full and smooth with notes of malt and peat, honeyed smoke and barley sweetness.
Long and pungent with honey and peat smoke.

If you've ever unthinkingly licked your fingers or eaten with your hands after handling coal you'll know the taste. I picked a bottle up from the local Asda last year and it was like sucking the bogwater out of a damp sod of turf. Due to its excellent reviews elsewhere and many gold medals, I'm going to have to assume that either the bottle I had was corked (if whiskey can cork?) due to Asda storing it on its side for so long, or else I must have had a bad batch. Long-story-short; extremely chemical-ey, tasted like coal, wouldn't buy again unless it turned out that my bottle was corked and therefore unrepresentative of the drink as a whole.

One of the worst single malts I have tried....and I have tried more than a dozen in the last two years. Starts out fine, then winds up like Johnny Walker, that is, like diesel fuel....strong diesel fuel. I can't even think of anyone to whom I could give this stuff.
Good first nose and taste, then disaster. Very bitter ending. Too bad. Worst whiskey I ever tasted ? But too damn close to try it again. Just not very good at all.
I can't even GIVE this bottle away :-(
