    Chivas Regal 12 Year Old

Chivas Regal is a world-famous Scotch blend which was first made in the early 20th century by Chivas Brothers. The company can trace its roots back to 1801, with the opening of a grocers at Number 13 King Street, Aberdeen. Selling luxury food, coffee and spices, it wasn't until half a century later that the company started to make whisky, and then not until post-US Prohibition that Chivas Regal 12 Year Old was first officially released. F. Paul Pacult described Chivas Regal 12 as "the blend for grown-ups", awarding it an impressive 9 out of 10. It's a very apt statement - this is a very refined blended whisky, with herbs, honey and fruit leaping forth on the palate. Regularly lauded by the critics, this is a superb blend in its price category, representing great value for money.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

    Nose

A creamy, aromatic melange of vanilla custard, hints of aniseed, lemon curd and butter toffee. Wood shavings and dried banana chips develop with just a hint of cassis.

    Palate

More of those banana chips showing through on the palate, this time there's a creamy hit of barley malt too, pepped up with a little allspice. Notes of ground walnut and caramel.

    Finish

Light spice and black pepper on the tail. Lingering notes of cereal sweetness.

    Overall

A spicy, beautifully balanced blend. Lots going on here.

    It's blended whisky!

Had a bottle of this for a while now, so had plenty of time to open up. However, I really can't get anything out of this from either the nose or the mouth. I recently tasted it alongside Monkey Shoulder and the MS blew the CR out of the water!

    Don't hate.

Fools. I realized that I had to go back to many whiskies that I didn't like as a young drinker. I didn't know how to add water. I didn't know Scotch. Whoever says this is inferior is silly. It is smooth, gentle, flavorful, and sweet. Spice at the end, instead of peat. (I rate based on price point.) Ardbeg is my fav.

    Disappointing.

Addendum to "Bleuch" Last night I vigorously shook my bottle of CR12 and left it open by the window for about an hour. I have developed this habit in recent months because it really makes a difference. Whisky needs to be woken up. Now almost all of the harshness is gone and I can taste a hint of single malt. Not much. An extremely ungenerous amount. But I feel I have to change my review to "Overpriced and disappointing" if not actually bad. If I bought this from Lidl for a tenner, I would probably be quite happy. But Scottish Leader Premium is still much better, as are a myriad of inexpensive whiskies. IF they tripled the single malt content, it just might be worth what they are asking for it.
