    Chivas Regal 12 Year Old

Chivas Regal is a world-famous Scotch blend which was first made in the early 20th century by Chivas Brothers. The company can trace its roots back to 1801, with the opening of a grocers at Number 13 King Street, Aberdeen. Selling luxury food, coffee and spices, it wasn't until half a century later that the company started to make whisky, and then not until post-US Prohibition that Chivas Regal 12 Year Old was first officially released. F. Paul Pacult described Chivas Regal 12 as "the blend for grown-ups", awarding it an impressive 9 out of 10. It's a very apt statement - this is a very refined blended whisky, with herbs, honey and fruit leaping forth on the palate. Regularly lauded by the critics, this is a superb blend in its price category, representing great value for money.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

    Nose

A creamy, aromatic melange of vanilla custard, hints of aniseed, lemon curd and butter toffee. Wood shavings and dried banana chips develop with just a hint of cassis.

    Palate

More of those banana chips showing through on the palate, this time there's a creamy hit of barley malt too, pepped up with a little allspice. Notes of ground walnut and caramel.

    Finish

Light spice and black pepper on the tail. Lingering notes of cereal sweetness.

    Overall

A spicy, beautifully balanced blend. Lots going on here.

    Well rounded

Pours a honey gold. Fruit hits up front in the nose, Primarily grape and pear, with subtle spiciness. The peppery spice rolls pleasantly across the tongue. Candied fruit and an overall sweetness dominates the palate. Mellow wood pokes through strongly in the middle, A bit of buttered bread comes through at the end. Sweet, easy sipping, the spiciness makes this a good Christmas drink and the Light fruitiness makes it delectable in the summertime. Well rounded, good tasting Scotch for the money.

How can I finish this whole bottle...

Bought for convenience and now sits there forever...

Master of Malt Customer May 13, 2020

Tastes likes alcoholic spicy fruit juice. Not very good.

It's fruity in some un-placeable way with some astringent note somewhere. Grapefruit rind comes to mind. Watery spices pepper or something like black cardomon flavour and the vague aroma of starchy, pineapple water.. the kind from those Prince's tins (more tinny than pineapply). It's complex-ish but in the wrong way. Rather than looking for what makes it taste good you end up looking for what doesn't fit right and something certainly doesn't. Smooth enough, marginally drinkable, wouldn't mix it and probably wouldn't bother buying again.

    Not for me

It is considered to be one of the best and budget friendly blended scotches of all time but just simply not for me. I couldn't like it.

    Overrated

Well, I wasn't impresseed by this one, certainly not because it says on the front label "Prince of whiskes" hahah. I've tasted better 12 years old, JW black or Ballantines are much smoother with more body. I never bought a bottle but I had shots fron 3 different bars, and they were all the same, just some basic, flat and fruity drams. Got even alc burn from 1 bar, that might have caused by some heat source but there is nothing special about the chivas 12. It's just a basic fruity whisky that was pretty flat and thin on my part. It's not bad though, but it's not anything special.. that's all i'm saying.
