Chivas Regal 12 Bottling Note

Chivas Regal is a world-famous Scotch blend which was first made in the early 20th century by Chivas Brothers. The company can trace its roots back to 1801, with the opening of a grocers at Number 13 King Street, Aberdeen. Selling luxury food, coffee and spices, it wasn't until half a century later that the company started to make whisky, and then not until post-US Prohibition that Chivas Regal 12 Year Old was first officially released. F. Paul Pacult described Chivas Regal 12 as "the blend for grown-ups", awarding it an impressive 9 out of 10. It's a very apt statement - this is a very refined blended whisky, with herbs, honey and fruit leaping forth on the palate. Regularly lauded by the critics, this is a superb blend in its price category, representing great value for money.

Whisky 12 Dram Collection

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: A creamy, aromatic melange of vanilla custard, hints of aniseed, lemon curd and butter toffee. Wood shavings and dried banana chips develop with just a hint of cassis.

Palate: More of those banana chips showing through on the palate, this time there's a creamy hit of barley malt too, pepped up with a little allspice. Notes of ground walnut and caramel.

Finish: Light spice and black pepper on the tail. Lingering notes of cereal sweetness.

Overall: A spicy, beautifully balanced blend. Lots going on here.

Chivas Regal 12 Year Old Reviews

Great Blended Whisky...Perfect for Beginners

I'm very new to drinking whisky and this was highly recommended by many online and off. I found it sweet but a little harsh at first with a bit of a burn but after it settled with a touch of water I found it very nice. I then added a little single malt from a speyside whiskey I had left and wow... It brought it on to a whole new level... I will buy it again... Recommended.

Love chivas regal

My favourite whisky only bettered by one chivas 18 year old.

21st September 2020

Lovely fruity character with notes of pineapple and citrus note some vanilla honey marzipan and light oakyness, very nice finish.

I am whisky drinker but Chivas Rega is one of my favorite 😍 got to try it to believe it.... take my won't regret it..❤

6th September 2020

Standard fare

Nothing to dislike about this drink, very easy drinking indeed, but far too on the sweet side for my taste.

16th July 2020

Wow.. I like it

7th June 2020

Well rounded

Pours a honey gold. Fruit hits up front in the nose, Primarily grape and pear, with subtle spiciness.

The peppery spice rolls pleasantly across the tongue. Candied fruit and an overall sweetness dominates the palate. Mellow wood pokes through strongly in the middle, A bit of buttered bread comes through at the end.

Sweet, easy sipping, the spiciness makes this a good Christmas drink and the Light fruitiness makes it delectable in the summertime. Well rounded, good tasting Scotch for the money.

31st May 2020

How can I finish this whole bottle...

Bought for convenience and now sits there forever...

13th May 2020

Tastes likes alcoholic spicy fruit juice. Not very good.

It's fruity in some un-placeable way with some astringent note somewhere. Grapefruit rind comes to mind. Watery spices pepper or something like black cardomon flavour and the vague aroma of starchy, pineapple water.. the kind from those Prince's tins (more tinny than pineapply).

It's complex-ish but in the wrong way. Rather than looking for what makes it taste good you end up looking for what doesn't fit right and something certainly doesn't.

Smooth enough, marginally drinkable, wouldn't mix it and probably wouldn't bother buying again.

8th May 2020

Not for me

It is considered to be one of the best and budget friendly blended scotches of all time but just simply not for me. I couldn't like it.

2nd May 2020

Well, I wasn't impresseed by this one, certainly not because it says on the front label "Prince of whiskes" hahah.

I've tasted better 12 years old, JW black or Ballantines are much smoother with more body.

I never bought a bottle but I had shots fron 3 different bars, and they were all the same, just some basic, flat and fruity drams. Got even alc burn from 1 bar, that might have caused by some heat source but there is nothing special about the chivas 12.

It's just a basic fruity whisky that was pretty flat and thin on my part. It's not bad though, but it's not anything special.. that's all i'm saying.

12th April 2020

Feel the burn!!

Didn't enjoy this at all. Nose wasn't too bad but from the first sip it unfortunately went straight downhill.
All I got was a sweet, grassy taste followed by a harsh burn.
The finish was bitter and short.
Not great.

18th February 2020

Poor! Very Poor!!!

I don't understand why this is so highly rated on this website.

It is (at most) an average, blended whisky, with somehow harsh nose and body.
It shouldn't cost more than £17 and it would still lose (quality wise) to other similarly priced blends such as Teacher's.

There's absolutely nothing special about this whisky.

No, I will never buy it again!!!

23rd January 2020

Excellent whiskey.

Very easy to drink and the taste is smooth. I have it with tonic water over ice.

25th December 2019

Quite complex

After reading the reviews and Paul Pacuit statement “alot goin on here”, being a novice but having my share of the good and bad, as a person who doesnt think rock-gut tastes bad considering the years of evolution involved “aka burnt, found it very smooth, and considering the peppery taste which i always considered “it’s alcohol for chrissakes”, not the rock-gut you whisky snobs consider, not having a glencairn glass, but a liquor glass (i noticed master disttillers using and you tube critics) the only thing i could find, and a dropper, if you put a couple drops, maybe four on a dram, the sherry nose comes out, and the fruit...quite complex, but im still assimulating into a critique...scotch aged 12 years how can you go wrong, .? (from someone who drinks rockgut haha)!

11th November 2019

Don't expect premium for <£30

If this was £40+ it’d be getting 1 star, but for £25 (actually I grabbed a 35cl for £11) you cant really complain.
It sips easy enough but it is a bit lacking at 40% abv. Considering it’s a 12 year blend, I had hoped for a little more on the palate and finish but I wasn't surprised when it wasn’t there.

10th November 2019

Anybody can drink it. It's special.

I bloody love it. It's so smooth. Very easily drinkable. Quite fruity. I generally prefer peaty, smoky whiskies like Talisker 10 etc. Never thought, I'd like a Chivas. But it's quite good. Unwinds the body and the mind in an epic way! I felt so relaxed after having 120ml neat of it in a sitting.

25th September 2019

17th June 2019

Will not buy again. Over priced and boring.

My opinion - very disappointing. For some reason or other I never bought Chivas before. It's a whisky that is always stocked in the supermarkets and the airport duty-free shops, but slightly upper in price, as though it was something special. We had some 12 yo at sale price in our local shop, so bought some - really not impressed at all. Too sweet. Lacking in complexity. Boring. Some one below has compared it to JWRL - absolutely not!

Dont waste your time

Love Scotch a lot, but this one is just as bad as Dewars. . . Worst gift ever!

16th February 2019

I’m not sure how correct this review would be, however, having recently been reintroduced to the joy that is the standard 12yr old Chivas Regal, which I already find to be superior & superb by itself & this despite being a staunch & somewhat snobbish single malt whiskey drinker, I mixed it with a shot of Glava which I’ve now confirmed as a new firm favourite of mine. Hence, cannot wait for next birthday which instructs the need for next level, £50 a bottle, Chivas Regal blue!
Having tasted some of the worlds, or factually Frances, finest Brandy/Cognacs, this 12yr old blend stands alone in its level. of smoothness & complexity & yet a simple splash of Glava can elevate it beyond compare to other blends. Please try it peeps, I assure that non whiskey drinkers concur, you absolutely will not be disappointed!!!

13th February 2019

Couldn't use.

I bought a bottle for guest. I tried to use it last Sunday celebrating my birthday. This was very embarrassing for me. When I tried to open it, it became so difficult the plastic on top broke and I couldn't pour it.

30th January 2019

Are there any 12yo blends worse than this one? Even a Balentine's 12yo tastes better, at a much lower price.

18th December 2018

Perfectly drinkable, but not that interesting.

4th December 2018

A classic blended Scotch!

Smooth! A great sipping Scotch!

14th November 2018

Good but bland

Tried it for the first time. It's a nice scotch with a good taste, very easy to drink. Downside is, that it's very bland and watery. If you were to add water you would get water with scotch taste. I see other reviewers comparing it to JWBL. JWBL has a more charismatic taste. The smoke and toffee/caramel taste give it a lot of character. The Chivas has a sweet taste, it's oily, but not as oily as say glenfiddich or glenlivet but it definitely has some of them in it. It just lacks some character. All in all it's a solid scotch. I would recommend it to first timers since it's the easiest to drink.
My current top 5:
1. JWBL *****
2. The Glenlivet 15 *****
3. Laphroaig 10 ****1/2
4. Chivas Regal 12 ****
5. Glenfiddich 12 ***1/2

26th September 2018

Top blended whisky

Got to say that for a blended this is up there with Johnnie Walker Black and Monkey Shoulder

7th September 2018

31st August 2018

Good value

For £25 this is a really decent whisky. A bit of vanilla, nicely sweet and a tiny whiff of smoke. 3.5 stars considering the price.

4th August 2018

Amazing for your moneys worth.

Worth a try!!!

18th July 2018

Highly inconsistent and just not that great

This is a barely okay whisky, and not something I think I'll ever spend money on again unless there's not much else to choose from. I'd much rather pay a little more and get something much, much better. And in the same price category you'll obviously find the Johnnie Walker Black Label, which most of the time seems superior to this blend.

And I say most of the time, because there really does seem to be a quality control issue with this product. The quality is quite inconsistent. Sometimes I've even had a bottle I've really enjoyed. The last one I purchased, however, convinced me to stay away in the future.

17th July 2018

It's good n after drink it's sounds good!! haha..

Chivas for first time

23rd June 2018

An excellent blended.

I’m a single malt drinker. But sometimes for a change I drink blended, then I go only for Chivas and JW black. This is an excellent blend. Definitely deserve more stars.

21st June 2018

Top dog

Quality whisky that suites all tastes

18th June 2018

Hi nice

10th June 2018

Chivas FTW

Picked up a 750ml bottle on sale at my local Bevmo for about $20 after taxes. For the price paid, this whisky has surpassed all my expectations.

On the nose, this whiskey has hints of vanilla, maple syrup, wood, and a citrus fruitiness.
On the palate, this whisky starts with a sweet note of honey and caramel, followed by a zesty, smoky, subtle lemon note. It then goes into a short finish with a mild, spicy, pepper note.

From my time with my bottle, my personal opinions of this whisky are that Chivas Regal 12 is a great blended Scotch for its price.

I give the bottle it is sold in 3 stars out of 5 stars, as the bottle feels mass produced and has no cork. I give the whisky itself 4.5 stars out of 5 stars. One cannot go wrong with picking up a bottle.

21st May 2018

I hate to say this but the nose and taste is very harsh, it’s bottled at 43% in this country, the quality has unfortunately slipped. It’s just fairly spirity, I usually favour cask strength whiskies so this isn’t usual for me to say this about a blend. I just didn’t find this to be a pleasent experience unfortunately. Dewars 12 does it for me, this doesn’t. If you buy this I recommend ginger ale. It’s the only way you will get through the bottle.

9th April 2018

good value for money

i thought it was very good. nice lingering taste. a little hot after-taste for me.

8th April 2018

Smooth, pleasant

If you drink this on the rocks then it is one of the most pleasant drinks out there. I think the price point Vs Quality is very good, value for money.

Cant go wrong for a gift. Little light in color lately, but the taste is still phenomenal. Way better than JWB12.

26th November 2017

15th November 2017

A very nice blended scotch

I love malt whiskies and of late some blends as well. Not all single malts are good nor are all blends inferior. Chivas 12 yo, Johnnie Walker Black Label and Ballantine's 12 yo are fine examples of good blends at very reasonable prices. It is a fagrant and flavourful drink best taken neat or with a spoonful of still water-an enjoyable treat after a hard day's work. One well known reviewer claims that there is a slight bitter after taste (presumably from multiple re-use of oak casks) which i find almost undiscrenable. A good dram for those cold nights.

22nd October 2017

Chivas Regal is excellent whisky and I admired it very much. Excellent to pallet. Did not get knocked out any time.

23rd September 2017

Great and peaty

I had some last night at an old dive bar, and I just loved it.

31st August 2017

Smooth criminal

Amazing and goes down like silk! Defiantly the best I've tried

28th August 2017

Nothing wrong with Chivas 12 at all. It's a decent blended Scotch. However, it's a bit boring. It seems a little too smooth and inoffensive. There's nothing that really makes it stand out. For the same price, I can get Monkey Shoulder. I'll stick with that.

26th August 2017

A solid if unexciting blend

Smooth, malty and medium bodied. Subtler than JW Red, deeper than Grouse. One of the better blends although a little overpriced.

10th August 2017

Good blend and smooth

Good blend smooth to have

10th August 2017

Sweet start, Harsh finish

Smell gives you vanilla first hand with some spice. Taste is smooth and sweet, like taking a mouthful of pudding. A bit too sweet for my taste. There is a huge kick-back after swallowing though, like it's fighting to go down. What starts sweet ends like a bad case of indigestion and it's not fun. It's okay if you want a drink after supper I suppose. I would recommend for those with a more delicate palate due to its dessert like taste, if you don't mind the sensation of it punching your esophagus on the way down...

7th August 2017

A Complex Blend

Sweet fruity notes, carmalized apples, savory overtones and tangy amplitudes. Charismatic and subtle warmth going down. Well worth a try for the price.

27th July 2017

I couldn't tell the difference between this and low priced whisky in India ..I tried hard to feel that difference but it tastes like local spirit

23rd July 2017

21st July 2017

My opinion on Chivas Regal 12 years old whisky

I'm fond of whisky, Scotch and Irish. Here in Turin where I live I pay a 12 years Chivas Regal 17 €.
It's a gift if you think that a good Italian or French wine comes at least at 6 €.
Excellent, glorious Whisky. I love also the Jameson Irish Whiskey and I alternate.
Mario, class 1930 (class means in Italy, birth year).

19th July 2017

Fantastic taste

Very nice & smoothe

9th July 2017

Well worth a try

Plenty of flavour and extremely smooth, the smell is misleading as it smells similar to bells, teachers etc. The taste on the other hand is worthy of a much more expensive single malt in my opinion.

27th June 2017

Chivas Convert

This blend is a delicious whisky with sweet and savory notes. Fresh fruit, hints of smoke and oak, toffee and dried banana chips. Received this whisky as a gift and I must say that as a staunch single malt lover, this whisky puts blends in a new perspective.

25th June 2017

one of the worlds best selling blends

bought a liter for € 28.50 so absolutely good value for money. The banana in the background is great together with the spice and the serial sweetness.Of course this is an intensely commercialy made blend, but one of the best selling blends around the world and I can taste why.

3rd June 2017

Overpriced and bland

It has almost no complexity and it is surprisingly bland for a 12 years old whisky, you get a lot of ethanol, some banana and pepper than it dies. Not a lot of caramel, vanilla, fruits or anything else to the taste. I'd rather drink basic Jameson than that. For the price this is ridiculous. If for you it's cheap than try it for yourself, if for you it's a big expense than consider something else.

1st June 2017

Simply disgusting. No character and not worth it.

Don't buy it unless you really are on a budget

30th April 2017

Poor whisky for the price

Just bought a bottle of this, complete rubbish for 28 quid, I wouldn't pay more than 18 pound for it honestly.

28th April 2017

Not the blend it used to be.

Reviewed April 2017. This is nothing like the smooth and enticing blend I used to drink. It is light, innocuous and without any real attraction. No longer a premium blend. Buy something cheaper such as Whyte and Mackay it is better value.

4th April 2017

I'm no whiskey conosiur but, after trying this one for the first time tonight I can say its the best whiskey I've had so far.

18th March 2017

24th February 2017

Smooth, sweet, silky. What more do you wamt form a vlemd ?

Sweet, but not overly cloying. The malt comes through nicely, dancing on the tongue. Silky smooth, it's a perfect blend, perfect for any occasions. Grab yourself a nice crystal whisky glass, put a couple of ice cubes in ( I personally have ice with blend, and some still spring water with single malt ), sit back, sip, and appreciate the sublime skills of The Master Blender. This is delicious stuff.

Best scotch

29th December 2016

To be a single malt, a malt whisky has to contain no more than that single malt. Chivas Regal is a blended whisky however, it's good to remember that it contains a superb single malt. It's this strathisla single malt that makes it stand out from all the other blended cheaper whisky. It is hard to rate a whisky, personal taste gives us all a different opinion. My opinion is a simple one. You will not get a better 12 year old whisky for the price. In fact it is better than many whisky's of a higher price. Chivas Regal is not a name that is a fly by night like many brands are these days. It's been around for a lot of years and will be around for a lot longer.

26th December 2016

Great scotch

I have consumed this scotch for may years. It's always been great andat a good price. For some reason Costco just stopped carrying it. So I have to go to Bevmo or Safeway.

Don't be put off by price or blend...look beyond your misconceptions.

Picked this up for £10 on offer (35cl) - a real find. Was dubious, but having looked beyond the naysayers at the good reviews and considerable pedigree (two golds and a silver), I decided to give it a punt. Glad I did. Funnily enough, my main reasons for purchase were a) the fact I had finished my last bottle of single malt and didn't think I'd squeeze another £35+ outlay past the wife (we have two young and expensive children) and b) curiosity.

First try - not fussed. Second try - didn't make the mistake of adding water, as I had been used to with some of the more complex, smokier malts I like. The Chivas revealed itself to be quite the dark horse - rivaling and, in some ways bettering, my last bottle of Balvenie Doublewood. A perfectly respectable and affordable blend - don't be a snob, at this price what do you have to lose?

Its My Dream

I have know about this whisky after reading novels in my mother Marathi. We are having 2 eagle shape bottles in our house, while my father is working in bar at my childhood. From that time i am dreaming about Chivas Regal. Today i am going to buy my first bottle.

5th June 2016

By far the best of a terrible category of readily available heavily discounted scotch blend. You may not pick it over Glenfiddich or The Macallan any day of the week after you win the lottery for sipping with a few drops of water. For a delicious and interesting blend, only until Megamillions hits, this is it. Neat, rocks, soda, chivalry? Yes. Have it any way you like and there is no need to suffer for purity or wear a hair shirt. It is $23 on sale at the drug store down the street, just $5 more than some terrible young bourbon.

My drink of the evening and it's like a smooth drink of pure .999 percent molten Gold. It's smooth, it shines, and it warms!! Life just couldn't be better than a quiet sunset, a smooth pipe and a glass of Chivas Regal 12 over ice. The drink of the Angels.

25th May 2016

It was much better in the eighties.

This was THE One and Only blended Scotch whisky for me in the eighties. But sadly they've changed the taste somewhere in the nineties. (Like Confused wrote) from rich, creamy, smooth and full of caracter and also with some custard I tasted in the finish to less caracter, sharp now and that custardy finish is completely gone. More smokeyness came instead of it.
Was that because they wanted to compete more with JWB? Which I don't like at all.
In the 80's I would have rated it 5 stars +, but now just 3-.
Anyone the same experience?

19th May 2016

Alcohol for dirty objects

Better to be used at cleaning up the hospitals floors.

18th May 2016

Harsh nose

Smells like some sort of cleaning fluid or rubbing alcohol, but it's not at all like that on the palette. Can put a reasonable dent in a bottle of this of an evening without too much trouble. Not unpleasant at all despite the smell.

14th May 2016

Well worth money.

As usual cheap and superb.

11th May 2016

Most disgusting Scotch I've ever tasted - and I've tasted some very cheap ones! This is worth about £2 a bottle based on my experience. Has the same antiseptic taste of stablemate Teachers - except Teachers is a fraction of the price and doesn't claim to be special. Never again will I throw money away on this garbage.

One of my favorite whiskeys in its price range . From the nose to notes and overall taste it has something of everything . I only have one downside to the whiskey and that is that its a lil bit soft on impact but atleast it comes back strong(:

30th March 2016

not bad

good with one ice cube or splash of water .. there is honey .. definitely hazelnut and vanilla .. banana chips .. the nose is inviting .. dont expect peat or smoke in here because there is non of that happening with it .. what shall i say more ? .. short finish ? .. good whisky .. not bad not expensive .. very reliable .. very accessable and recommended for beginners! and IMO i prefer johnnie walker black over this one , if you have a sweet tooth go regal but if you are a peat and smoke fan go black and you won't come back ! i mean .. to come back to this one !

28th March 2016

The opposite of subtle

Definitely trading on the name and not the taste. Very disappointing for the money. Starting to be heavily discounted in supermarkets over here as folks catch on.

Banana chips

I'm more a malt maniac myself, but because the Chivas 12 was on special sale last week (under € 30,00 for a liter bottle) I thought let's try this.Very smooth and creamy with a nice vanilla and caramel note and a bit of lemon in the background. The pepper in the finish did the trick.I compared with my notes of the Strathisla I had a couple of years back, and very much of the tasting notes back then I see reappearing in this Chivas 12.Overall a good choice.

Like some others here, I too, was reluctant to try this 'cheap' whisky, since it has such commercial appeal and such a low price. I drink what I think to be top shelf single malts, such as; Lagavulin 16, Talisker 10, Ardbeg 10, Uigeadail, Laphroaig (all), Highland Park, Old Pulteney . .& many more. Didn't see the need to try this stuff. But I did. Bought a 50ml sampler, brought it home, sat down for a serious try. Color is a nice golden amber (probably E150 color added), still pleasant to the eye; nose is very well described by MofM . . . creamy vanilla, bananas; palate . . .nice and creamy, spicy, a little anise, orange(?); finish is spicy, a little peppery, but nice.
Overall . . . very pleasantly surprised. My honest opinion is, it is worth serious consideration by the serious scotch drinker. If you are looking for something in the same price range (blended) that is a tad better, try Monkey Shoulder. But, Chivas Regal is good whisky.

Not bad...

As promarly a single malt drinker, I have been broadening my exposure to blended scotch (the only blended scotch I've had semi-regularly is JWBL which is reasonably good). Recently I tried out Dewars WL, which I found utterly repugnant, so I had very low expectations for the Chivas Regal 12y.

Surprisingly, I found the Chivas 12y to be pretty good. The nose is light, almost difficult to pick out, but the notes of raisin, distant smoke and vanilla. The palate is more robust, though still light, with oaky vanilla, a hint of smoke and some distant dark fruit (a drop of one of Abalour's sherried malts somewhere in the mix?). The finish hangs on longer than I'd have expected, with a hint of tannins, but not unpleasantly so. Make no mistake, this is no Glendronach or Lagavulin, but it's pretty tasty. Notably absent were any offensive grain notes.

If you're looking for a good, reasonably priced, but undemanding scotch, this would be a solid option at a good price.

23rd January 2016

A great blend!

It's a decent dram!

21st January 2016

Neat, rocks,soda... Makes JWB taste like dishwater.

21st January 2016

Very good

18th January 2016

Graham macaulay

A great blend, fruit, spice, sweet and with a whiff of smoke. Don't discount it over the currently more fashionable malts. It's a decent dram!

17th January 2016

I know this libation has been with us for quite a while and I have been drinking Scotch for some time. For some reason however, this one always eluded me, until last night while I was sitting at a local establishment catching up with an old friend and I decided to have one. I liked it so much that I bought a bottle on the way home. Pretty good stuff, especially for less than $30 a fifth.

Chivas regal the best ever scotch

Excellent scotch

7th January 2016

The best ever scotch

Had it with my uncle for the first time and it was a great and a unique experience. Cheers to Chivas😊

4th January 2016

I first bought this whisky about 20 years ago, and now it is the only on I buy.
SO smoooooth !!!! Love it.

23rd December 2015

Very good

I agree with the description above. Definitely feel the vanilla and banana, with the spice and pepper aftertaste. I like it more than Dewars 12 if anyone is between both.

I'm a beginner and can't wait to keep on tasting!

22nd December 2015

chivas regal 12 years old

a fan of this brand

27th November 2015

Really good.

25th November 2015

A mature 12 year blend

I am a fan of blends, usually older and more expensive, however, I enjoyed this very much. It's a nice robust blend, large on the mouth but clean.

21st November 2015

Number one whisky.

I tried almost all higher whisky brands chivas is no. 1 in all criteria .

19th October 2015

Best together with a glass of water

It's best together with a glass of water, more smoother and gentle that way. Light spicy, some weak bitter taste. Not complex, and the finish could have been more interesting, could have last longer. I think I'll buy this again, but it's not my first priority when it comes to whiskies. A whisky just over the average level, but that's not bad.

9th October 2015

Good blended Scotch for a change

I love Scotch whisky and I love to drink it. That means, 0,2 to 0,3 l per night are my average consumption. It goes without saying that I don't bother about expensive Single Malts. I am rather looking for affordable Scotch Whiskies, Single Malts or blends, which provide a reasonably enjoyable drinking experience.

So far, I have mainly feasted on Johnnie Walker Black Label and Glenmorangie The Original 10 years. Now I will add this Chivas Regal 12 Year Old to my list. It is not as complex and good as the JWBL, let alone the Glenmorangie. But it makes a decent change to my standard blend every day whisky JWBL.
Nice nose, solid palate, you can feel that they are trying to reach up to the Black Label. And, I must admit, they do not miss it all too far.

2nd October 2015

Trial bottle

I bought a 2 oz bottle of this at total wine. Im not much of an alcohol drinker but i thought this was good. Ive had one other whisky which was a lot smoother but this has more flavor. I believe one of the other reviews said they tasted a bit of peppermint, i would agree on that. Its nice and sweet and not a lot of after taste(which I like). Like I said i didnt buy a full bottle, im guessing the price is somewhere between 35-42, i feel as though it could be cheaper but thats just my opinion. I could see this being many peoples favourite whisky. Slainte mhar

31st August 2015

I change my mind, wrote the review below

I change my mind, I wrote the review below and realized I was being too harsh. Chivas regal 12 is delicate, the grains in whisky is well blended, whereby its integrated well into the whisky. For $40 you can get better stuff, but its all personal preference.
If you want to get a whisky that is delicate and floral without being too offensive with any taste such as peat then this is for you.
that being said, this whisky is not too flavourful in anyway, although it is very sweet.

29th July 2015

overpriced compared to other "entry level" blends

I been a single malt drinker for awhile now, and lately have been exploring blends just because i want to broaden my perspective on whisky. Anyways, I just tried some of this chivas, its not bad but its not good. Would I buy this again? probably not, this is because its overpriced, teacher's higland cream is MUCH better, tastes way silkier and rich. Chivas 12, is very bland and "delicate" its very thin. For the same price, johnnie walker black crushes chivas 12.

So what im saying is, if you're looking for an overpriced blend that is okay to drink i guess this would be it.

28th July 2015

I bought a bottle on special for $42. I used to dronk it quite a lot but bhavent bought a bottoe for five or so years.
I remember it being thick n smooth, a really nice texture n taste for a blended.
The new bittle i bought is thin and sharp and lacking any charater.
Has the quality declined or has my palatte improved?

29th June 2015

A lovely blend, a nice little gimmick

So smooth, so rich and delightful. I prefer this blend to single malts. It is well done and very tough product to beat,

17th June 2015

Reasonable Whisky

Quaffable blended Whiskey, creamy in the mouth with a spicy peppery finish, definitely worth considering for the price.

5th May 2015

1st bottle

Gradually getting to enjoy, I'm try all types of whisky blended and malts. Had a few visit to different distilleries in Scotland and understand more about what the differences are. I would recommend this as a mature whisky drinkers choice, definitely a top 5 for me.

15th April 2015

Who wrote that CR12 is the best, they have not tasted any other whiskeys. For exemple Glenlivet, Aberlour, Benriach etc.. This more suitable for coctails or quick drink, shots.

11th April 2015

It is great.

I have been drinking this for years, but I have the cherrywood rocker and the 1.75 litre does not come with the handle.

21st March 2015

Chivas is a wonderfully smooth whisky. Best I have had.

4th March 2015

Nice presentation, shame about the actual whisky

Thought I'd have a go at this as I saw it at a reduced price, and after enjoying JW Black a lot more than expected. Didn't get this at all though - too harsh on the finish ('black pepper' notes generally just turn out to be throat burn for me though), thin and with far too much banana everywhere, and for me, not much of the expected richness and smoothness.

Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad drink as such, I'd take it over a budget blend no problem, but for the price you're better off with an entry level malt.

13th February 2015

Delectable Chivas

This is too good, I have been a fan of it for a while now. It is too smooth, aromatic and beautiful!

1st February 2015

Classy blend

I would not agree with the two previous extremely biased (or even obsessed) opinions. It is a juicy yet elegant blend, showing both a nice (orchard fruits based) aroma and a chewy, moreish mouthful which accords to the nose. Good and quite long aftertaste as for a blend. In sum, one of the better 12yo blends on the market.

29th January 2015

Not bad at all

Great Blend, not to be compared to Malt. In fact it tastes better than some blend like the Glenlivet 12 that is aged in American Oak. American Oak just sucks

24th January 2015

Tasten like ... Nottingham?!

Drank this half an hour after I had a glas of Scapa 16 yr. True, nog fair to compare bit I will nevertheless. Of the blend nothing remains. Glad finished the bottle now.

20th December 2014

Never again.

Had a taste of this yesterday and I never thought I could fill my mouth with something so vile and disgusting as this foul putrid liquid.
I was literally astonished by how much I hated this whisky.
All I could taste was a strong chocolate note on the tail end.
I don't know if this was a problem with this specific bottle but it was a most jarring experience I can recommend to no one but my most hated enemy.

15th December 2014

best i could afford

when it comes to whiskey i know jack didily squat, however ive tried a few and havent found anything better yet. i always try to buy different whiskeys all the time and for the buget this is the best. stay away from bells, and grants, yuk

11th December 2014

Great Chivas!

It is the one of best 12 years blend that I've tasted, I really feel the butter toffee taste on it and the finish is pleasently smooth.

10th December 2014

12 years of boredom.

27th November 2014

It's Friday evening.

15th November 2014

A very good blend

easy to drink, honey, ripe apple.. very refreshing i have to say if compared to JW black label, however Black Label is more complex.. Chivas is good if you just want an easy going scotch and very refreshing. GREAT

9th November 2014

better than most

Its very good. If you want decent quality for an affordable price, well worth the investment.

5th November 2014

best blend I've had

Has to be the best blend I've had, still would not buy this over my single malts like Jura

30th October 2014

can't compare to glenlivet

Is first taste is sweeter but lingering finish too spicy. Not smooth to me but seemly odd compared to a single malt. I'd rather spend the extra.

24th October 2014

different from 1 bottle to the other

ive had bad and good bottles of this. never tastes the same to me

9th October 2014

Whether on the nose or pallette this blend affords the drinker with a complex blend of hand soap, battery acid, and mule urine. It's a terrible blend for the money!!

20th September 2014

This is well worth the price.

The store across the way from me has it for $30 and it is definitely worth the money, it tastes and smells exactly how it is described here, although its more of a sipping liquor in my personal opinion.

10th August 2014

Solid Blended Scotch

Where I am, I can get this for just around $30, and it is well worth the price. It has all of the tasting notes as described above, though I'm reminded of carrot cake a lot when I drink it. No reason to complain. A solid blended scotch.

2nd July 2014

Great for a blended

Great for a blended whisky. As they say - quality blend. One of the best blended whiskies for it's price, in my opinion.

21st June 2014

Good entry-level

Not spectacular, but a quality blend and worth drinking before moving on to other, more challenging malts.

5th June 2014

Essential Blend

Yes, it is somewhat bland, but it is such an easy dram with a fabulous balanced gentle taste. Sometimes I just want a simple quality blend and Chivas 12 fits the bill and never disappoints. I take it with a small ice cube as there is an unwanted alcohol nip. It is often compared unfavourably with its rival JWB but I believe Chivas stands up well. They are both overpriced so I have marked it down accordingly.

5th June 2014

Give me a good bourbon. Waay better.......sorry.....

17th May 2014

Good starter whiskey

I was introduced to this a few years ago as my first starter whiskey and I have no complaints at all, I find it best served with one cube. if you want to treat yourself the 18year is defiantly worth a shout.

9th May 2014

Slick Ric loves it!

15th April 2014

Daisy Lofthouse Young enough to know BETTER AND MORE

This is blended NOT malt!! Best tipple goin,, neat single cube or with green tea!!

13th April 2014

Best blended whiskey I have tasted

well I was just curious as I don't usually like many of the blended varity and usually stick with my favourafe Bowmore single malt. however when I tasted chivas regal 12 it had that lovely rich notes of honey that I could tasted and feel in all it's thickness swirling around my mouth and when swallowed it left this very smooth finish and I must say long smooth and soothing finish with no harsh or burning sensation to it. it actually reminded me of a Jura 10 year old origin but actually much nicer. but I must say this has to be the best blended whiskey I have ever tasted and will buy again. that and Bowmore are my leading favourites now but I love tasting different whiskeys even this I have my two that lead the way for my taste buds. 10/10 for a premium blended whiskey. try it it will not disappoint.

12th April 2014

does it expire?

I am just curious, does chivas regal expire? I have one in our house, given to me as a gift by a friend but I am not sure if it expires?

4th April 2014

Slick Ric likes it

18th February 2014

Decent but not jw black label

It's ok. A supplier gave me a 1/5 Asa. Gift. Asked him to give me JW black label next year or I am switching suppliers.

18th February 2014

Good for newbies like myself

I mentioned in my review for JW Black that it and this formed the gateway of my interest in scotch.

Has more of a bite than Black, which is why I prefer this. I don't know if this is frowned upon (some guy looked at me with disgust when I did this), but I poured a generous bit of this in my cappuccino and it tasted amazing.

31st January 2014

I forgot an assessment to put.

And whisky is really good.

From Russia with love.

Very quite good taste. For me even it is better than Hennessy VS cognac.

What an improvement

Bought a bottle and did not like the bland flavour, although well made and of good balance. Also purchased 20cl Caol Ila 12 that was too thin, so added 10cc to the 2/3 of remaining Chivas. Wow! What an improvement. It adds some decent top notes and transforms Chivas into a terrific blend.

In family party it's just cool(or hot)

17th July 2013

No big deal

I repeat, it is no big deal. More to the bland side with nothng interesting either in the nose or the taste. If there is woody note at all, it must be balsa

Somewhat commercialized, yet still a good, solid Scotch Whisky.

World's Best Blended Whisky

Smooth, Sweet with a Woody Finish. Simply Wonderful & Extremely Satisfying..

20th June 2013

A good blend, but somewhat overpriced

This is a pretty solid middle-of-the-road blend, and certainly a good entry to quality scotch blends. Just a hint of smoke, sweet but definitely not cloying, a little bit of complexity.

However, I think it's a bit too expensive for what it is. There are similarly good blends (Teachers, Black Bottle) for less money, or better blends for about the same price (Johnnie Walker Black).

8th June 2013

Cracked this open for celebration

First time dipping into a scotch that costs more than thirty dollars.
I was very impressed at how much more complex it was in comparison to other whiskys I've tried.
On the nose and on the taste, there is a heavy presence of what I can only describe as soap. And yet, it's still a very good whisky, but I think there must be many others that are better in the same price range.

This is what I drink when it comes to whiskey

It's smooth on the rocks or not. I really don't like any whiskey on the rocks but I like to see the taste differences. There is better, but this a good start. I my self just started to drink whiskey. Do like Johnnie Walker.

22nd September 2012

Overrated and overhyped but still not bad

it's a good blend. It is overrated but still it makes for a good decent whiskey.

23rd August 2012

Bottled rubbish

Did not worth the money. Never buying this one again

6th August 2012

Worth revisiting at the right price

Hadn't had Chivas for 20 years, saw a half bottle knocked down to less than a tenner so I though why not? Glad I did, a really pleasant drop, if you can get over the single vs blended snobbery. On taste alone I thought is was very good and would buy again.

6th March 2012

Great Stuff

Sweet, Smooth and a hint of woodiness. Loved it..

8th February 2012

Good stuff, but ...

A really fine blend that you can spend time with finding touches of, amongst the usual stuff, a little smoke, salt and lavender. But, OMG, the lable and box! Hand me my buckler serf for I will forego to the Co-Op.(other supermarkets apply and can be smite'd equally)

Blended vs Premium

12 yr - "premium" vs. "blended" - what's the difference? Had a 1.75 litre (with handle on bottle) with "premium scotch whiskey" on label. Just bought another 1.75 litre (with no handle) with "blended scotch whiskey" on label.

7th August 2010

i like it

26th May 2010

A bit disappointing

Had a hope for a classy dram but this was not quite that. It's a bit cheapy, I mean a strong burn feeling, a tad bland nose and lack of complexity on the palate. I enjoyed Dewar's White Label & Teacher's much more.
