Bunnahabhain's Stiùireadair single malt pays homage to the distillery's shoreline on the north-east coast of Islay. They used whisky matured in first and second fill Sherry casks, with a leaning towards deliciously coastal malt.
Brine, toasted sugar and caramel-drizzled raisins.
Honey-roasted nuts, cinnamon and clove, with a touch of salt sea too.
Sherried peels and chilli-chocolate.
Really nice, you get the sea taste coming through. Nice price for a house whiskey.
Love it. Had been buying the Bunnahabhain 12 year but price has really shot up so I tried this less pricey NAS offering. I enjoy it very much and find that is very similar, particularly on the palate, to the 12 year.
Had this several times now and was Initially a bit underwhelmed. To be fair, It’s a very different animal from Its big brother and they they don’t really bear comparison and that I think Is where my mistake lay. Picked up a couple of bottles today and am really rather glad I did (on offer in a well known supermarket for twenty five quid), this Is by far the best batch Ive tried. Sweet with a very heavy sherry nose and pallet, it really opens up with water and will stand quite a lot. I do wonder if the boys have listened to previous criticism and stepped up. The cask engagement seems far better and I suspect some superior casks have been used. The caveat Is that I probably wouldn’t buy it at full price unless choice was limited, but at twenty five pounds It was a bit of a bargain.
Spot on with the MoM tasting notes, a very nice sherry cask whisky that's a real bargain if you can get it for a bit less than the rrp which feels a bit steep. Its not super complex but it is very rich, satisfying and drinkable.
The sherry casks really do a number on this whisky. This won't be to everyone's taste but I liked it a lot. The merest drop of water opens it up nicely bringing out a puddingy dried fruit flavour. As Islay malts go this is very different, but that's no bad thing. No age statement - no problem.
