Bunnahabhain is best known for its unpeated whiskies, but the Islay distillery also produces the occasional peated whisky that goes by the name Staoisha. Distilled in 2013, this expression spent 10 years maturing in a host of first-fill oloroso sherry butts and now joins the 100 Proof Edition from Signatory, appropriately bottled at the old school 100 proof, 57.1% ABV.
Intensely peaty, with big waves of iodine, peppermint, and earthy smoke supported by meaty malt, pressed apples, and buttered crackers.
Bold, smouldering ash, charcoal, smoked oak and burnt biscuits lead the way before syrupy flapjack, cocoa, and anise develop in time.
A touch of candied smoked bacon, oily smoked nuts and clove.
