This is the Octomore 12.1 from Bruichladdich, distilled on the isle of Islay and boasting a characteristically peaty profile. Produced with 100% Scottish barley, it has been peated to 130.8PPM and matured for five years in first-fill American whiskey casks before being bottled up at a hefty 59.3% ABV. These expressions offer up oodles of peat, yet still manage to have a somewhat delicate and deliberate flavour profile – a tough balance to hit, but Bruichladdich's team are masters of doing so.
Green apples, chocolate orange, dry smoke with a hint of meatiness to it.
Heathery smoke now, still subtly meaty and spicy, joined by vanilla pod and milk chocolate notes, and a touch of apricot jam.
Lasting brown sugar and toasted teacake.

Good this as a 30th birthday. I left it a few days before opening due to the price and my worry of it not living up to the standard i was hoping for. This was something i should never of worried about, this is a smokey dream. The 59.9% is merely a number, not a sharp alcohol taste just a blend of flavors finishing of with the most perfect bonfire flavor. This whiskey is nothing like i have ever tried. It won't be a regular drinker but to have ready in the cupboard makes me smile more than it probably should.
