Douglas Laing
Scotland
A limited edition release of Douglas Laing's Big Peat blended malt, named one of the mains roads on the island. Though the well-loved whisky festival on Islay didn't quite take the same form as usual in 2020, Douglas Laing still wanted to mark the occasion to celebrate, and they've done so with an expression made exclusively from Islay whiskies aged for at least 8 years. 3,000 bottles were released.
Charred oak, toasted marshmallows, a whiff of lemon and lime, meaty malt and mint.
Continued smokiness, now paired with cinder toffee and melon. Rock pool minerality, crunchy brown sugar and a touch of cut grass.
Lasting peat reek on the finish.
Great and everything I want in an Islay Malt
I’d suggest there’s a fair amount of Ardbeg in this one. Either way, it’s a belter. Lovely stuff - thanks Big Peat.
Brought Islay to me this summer when I couldn’t leave Brighton! A taste of Islay life with earth, peat, smokiness but with a big hit of sweetness running through it.
The ‘thing’ (or one of the things) about Big Peat is the versatility in every release: as all components remain the same the dosage of each ensures no release is ever the same as the previous or the next. Of course there’s always the recognisable typical Islay character carrying peat, smoke, brine, … In this case I find more emphasis on maritime (Caol Ila?) aroma’s and flavors.
