Curiositas is a 10 year old, peated release from the Benriach distillery in what they call the 'classic Speyside style'. A distinct malt with great depth and a bittersweet balance.
Grassy malt and honeyed apple, with a good whack of oak-rich smoke developing underneath.
Still packing a handsome combination of fresh apple and soft smoke, now with a hint of heather in the background.
Waxy peels, coriander and pepper, wrapped up in cinder toffee.
First impression was no flash as when I opened it the cork it fell to pieces, but oh my the nose! Beautiful. And then contrary to the label tried it straight...love it. Not to be a complete rebel I tried it with an ice cube, and as they suggest, perfect!. Lovely finish. Would definitely buy again, this hits my flavour profile indeed, Illeach, Ardberg, and now Benriach Curio.....s'pose one should go find a replacement cork?
I tried this when I found a bottle on sale. I'm so glad I did. It is different from many styles. Not quite Islay smokey, more like a lightly smoked bacon with plenty of spicy fruit to add complexity. I don't normally drink during the week, but this is a bottle that has been an absolute go to. I'm going to grab another one soon. I reckon as long as you treat it on its own merits, not try to fit it into a Islay/Peat monster or not box, you could really enjoy this.
A huge change from last year. No where near as full, sweet and bourbon-y. The smokey (not iodine) peat is more prominent this year, maybe because of the lighter body. The only minus for the previous batch was the short, abruptly ending finish. That's not found here. But overall I think I preferred the other batch. This is still very much worth the money, a measly €35,-. Better to have big batch variation than a constant mediocre product.
Non Chill Filtered, Natural Coloured bottled at 46% Thats a good start! The peat component of this one is more Bonfire Smoke than Isla Peatiness. Warm Dry smoke followed by fruity sweetness but changing to a malty sour tang. The virgin oak casks give it a Cambletown style spice finish, not a bad thing at all. The finish is medium + length. Add a few drops of water to your dram and it will quieten down the Smoke and spice a little but just a few drops! At this price I think it is a pretty good dram. Nice to find something a little different yet familiar at the same time.
