The small batch Kentucky straight bourbon honours the legacy of Meredith Basil Hayden, Sr., who back in the 1790s was known to use more rye in his mashbill than other distillers. (He's also the chap that Old Grand-Dad bourbon is named after.) Crafted by the great Booker Noe in 1992, Basil Hayden bourbon utilises a similar mashbill as its namesake would have used, with high rye but a lighter take on the style.
Cracked black pepper, rye, and oaky spice. Hints of green pepper, lemon peels, and creamy, zesty lemon curd.
Rice Krispies, toasted cereal progressing to popcorn with gentle marshmallow, custard cream sweetness.
Toasty popcorn with lashings of butter!

Ok - not challenging but very drinkable and a decent value - especially if you dabble in bourbons.
Very disappointed
I'm no expert when it comes to bourbon, but this bourbon has none of the depth and sweetness I've come to expect from even decent bourbon. The bottle branding and mid-tier price point grabbed my attention when looking for something new. I actually think Jim Bean and Jack Daniels have more going for it than this bourbon. It isn't terrible, it's just bland and thin. It does have a spicy finish similar to a rye. I wouldn't buy it again.
This is not a good bourbon. It's thin, weak, nothing of interest. Well brand at best. Looks as if they are faking reviews on all the websites - no one who drinks bourbon would give this more than one or two stars.
For those like me that like smooth and mellow--you will like this whisky. Those looking for a murderous bite and numbing taste buds aftertaste--this one is not for you. I liked it so well I am picking up a case! I am a reformed scotch snob.
