The small batch Kentucky straight bourbon honours the legacy of Meredith Basil Hayden, Sr., who back in the 1790s was known to use more rye in his mashbill than other distillers. (He's also the chap that Old Grand-Dad bourbon is named after.) Crafted by the great Booker Noe in 1992, Basil Hayden bourbon utilises a similar mashbill as its namesake would have used, with high rye but a lighter take on the style.
Cracked black pepper, rye, and oaky spice. Hints of green pepper, lemon peels, and creamy, zesty lemon curd.
Rice Krispies, toasted cereal progressing to popcorn with gentle marshmallow, custard cream sweetness.
Toasty popcorn with lashings of butter!
Even before tasting, this struck me as a premium product. The bottle is unusual, eye-catching and distinctive. The taste didn't disappoint either - smooth, rich and well-balanced with delicate flavours that work well to sip alone or in my favourite whiskey-based cocktail: an old-fashioned.
This drink has really surprised me. It has a nice aroma and the flavor is not strong and you can notice a lot of nuances. It's very good. I have enjoyed it cold and alone, without ice. But it can be perfectly combined with other drinks. It is a perfect drink to take after a hard day of work, to disconnect, relax and rest.
Very good quality product comparing to others in similar price range. Great mellow taste experience which last quite long. Wonderful with lime or coke or Pepsi.
Has a great taste that doesn't burn your throat but certainly warms your cockles. Silky to drink and doesn't overwhelm. Would highly recommend to friends and family who enjoy a bourbon.
On first impressions the bottle looks superb, love the design very much. Normally I have a mixer with my whisky but this being a premium bottle I wanted to savour the taste. The first glass was a warmer upper, certainly fired my insides up and it has a pleasant taste, for me I was thinking I was getting a slight aftertaste of vanilla. This is an enjoyable drink either on your own relaxing at the end of a hard day or entertaining with friends, thouroughly recommend.
