Grand Quinquina is a wine-based aperitif made by Byrrh, an old producer founded in 19th Century France. As the name suggests, it contains a fair amount of quinine, which adds bitterness to the sweet muscat wine that forms the basis of this drink.
This can also be used in place of Dubonnet to create an excellent version of one of the very best Scotch cocktails: the Arnaud’s Special.
Byrrh is sweeter than comparable products (Bonal, St. Raphael Rouge), although fans of Dubonnet (which I am not) should definitely give this a try, as it tastes somewhat like a classed-up, more complex version. Could also stand in as an interesting substitute for Punt e Mes.
It's excellent! I've created a drink I call the Corona Cocktail. 2 parts Byrrh and 1 part Ketel One preach and orange blossom botanical vodka. Served with slice of tangelo. I always have one when I've been out in the contagious world.
My favourite just on the rocks or to make a Negroni sometimes an Americano.
Imaging a drink in between Antica Formula and Dubonnet and this is it. Brtillaint in any cocktail as a sweet vermouth, especialy Negronis.
