Villa Lobos Reposado tequila from Carlos Camarena, the mind behind other favourites like Tapatio and Ocho Tequila. The Villa Lobos range spend at least 6 months resting in tanks before being aged in oak, a process that imparts a silky quality to the tequila, so says Camarena. The Reposado is treated to a maturation of 11 months in oak before it is bottled.
Chestnuts and toasted pumpkin seeds with lime zest. Smouldering sawdust, popcorn, chilli and huge wafts of vanilla. Creamy, buttery custard pastry, banana milkshake, hazelnuts. Gentle pepper prickle, suggestions of sweet pickle brine and lingering vanilla on the finish.
I must admit I'm not a 'reposado guy' in any event. I love blancos and I enjoy anejos and I generally don't see the need for anything in the middle, but thats just me. My problem here is that the blanco is one of my 5 star tequilas of all time and just 11 months in a cask later it comes out like this- a rather odd dumbing down of the original agave and pepper highs. It gets weirder- the back taste is a dry cardboard sensation that is almost unpleasant. Don't get me wrong, the Villa Lobos range is a sensation and I have time and time again tried to love (or even like) this and can't believe that I don't. But I don't....
Beautifully balanced reposado with completely pure flavor and light sublime balance of oak and agave
The NEW Tequila Villa Lobos Repo is rested 6 months in steel tanks then aged 11 months in American oak. The Nose is light, almost a white wine soft delicate aroma. It has slight mint, and some fruit, like apples and peach. It has a delicate floral aroma, and just a pinch of pepper. I could smell faint perfume and a slight citrus (lime) aroma. Taste was a light oil, with fast moving legs, a slight burn only at first, with some light spice, some sweetness and a fruity and smooth mouth feel. There was agave presence but not overwhelming by any means. It has a thin taste,is light and so easy to drink. After a few sips I noticed a slight smoky taste, but just a hint. The Finish was light, with some spice, light smoke and a smooth, balanced tasty medium exit. I like that it is different, not a typical vanilla/caramel overpowering taste. Even the barrel aging seems mild. This is a light beautiful drinking Repo. ENJOY.
