El Rayo Tequila pays homage to the legend that lightning struck an agave plant, cooking it and creating the first ever Tequila. This particular expression is not made with lightning, but with 105 year old copper stills, which distil the Blue Weber agave twice before its bottled up straight from the still. Very handsome bottles too, mind. Skip the Margaritas on this one, this Tequila is literally made for a Tequila & Tonic (catchily named a T&T).
Exceptionally smooth and gentle, with an almost oily mouthfeel, notes of citrus, lots of earthy agave and a hint of flinty minerals, with a warming peppery finish.
The roasted agave really comes through nicely in this tequila, with lighter grassy notes and as others have said a savory kick that's hard to put your finger on. Not the most complex but absolutely great stuff for the price.
Smooth at first, but has an unpleasantly bitter lingering aftertaste. Disappointing, because I bought this expecting it to be "Exceptionally smooth and gentle", which is a description far better suited for Cazadores Blanco, my current benchmark for smooth tequilas.
Savoury notes at first, particularly olive briney, followed by the sweetness and maltiness. Typical of blended tequilas! Absolutely delicious to sip on, much too good for the shooting culture!
My favourite tipple of choice....
Tried this with a friend who works in the drinks industry the other day. We both loved it. Smooth yet intricate flavours - 10/10
