Guillermo Sauza's family have a rich Tequila-making history, with Don Cenobio a key figure in establishing Tequila as we understand it today. When Guillermo was little, his grandfather sold the company, however, dashing his chances of growing up to become a jet-setting mariachi band brand ambassador for the family's spirits (this is all true by the way). They held on to the distillery and land though, and Guillermo was able to get the traditional distillery (deemed too "inefficient" and old fashioned in the 1960s) back up and running, launching Fortaleza in 2005.
Everything a good tequila should be with herbaceous, vegetal agave, citrus, green olives and brine as well as a creaminess that carries into rich buttery character.
Me and the wife went through a tequila phase this year after not touching it since we had a cheap tequila experience as teens. We tried a bunch of the best tequila's and while we think some are overhyped (G4 or Patron for example) we thought this was the best by a long way. We've ordered it three times now and are always impressed. I'm not a neat guy but this makes a wonderful margarita and a exceptional paloma. 5/5, highly recommend.
I can't give this a 5 as, in my humble opinion, it's not the nectar of the gods, but it is the best tequila I've ever drunk. It's just smoother and more flavourful than any other. If you’re mixing, use G4 or Terralta, but if you’re drinking straight, and you really want to experience all the traditional tequila process and tradition, go Fortaleza. And Still Strength, yes, it's even better
I know it's not the cheapest but if you want to taste a tequila that is totally pure and has integrity then this is the one for you.
Apart from shots & a cheap bottle bought in Spain, I had no experience with tequila. I watched some reviews online to get a feel for what to order & Fortaleza is revered as a brand. They hand blow the bottles & the stoppers are painted by hand; the presentation is a work of art. As for the liquid within, expect a honey/caramel start and viscous mouthfeel, notes of cinnamon, just skirting a faint bitterness into a peppery finish, all unified by a tinge of witch hazel and funk. I like it a lot.
Great smoth taste. Best tequila I've had.
