12 Year Old Extra Añejo Rum

“I'm a fan of Cuban rums: my go to bottles for (mostly) mixing with ginger beer are the Havana Club, Cubay, Santiago 6/7yr expressions - whichever is on offer at the time. This was bought by my youngest for my birthday and it's very much appreciated! Anyone that is used to the 7yr Cubans will recognise this as an older relo; it makes a reasonably smooth sipper and a very nice mixer, though I wouldn't generally waste it on that. At first pouring it smells unmistakable Cuban: apple crumble sweet pear, toasted nuts maybe, and just a hint of something flammable. After sitting in the glass for a while the nose turns to a burnt sugar/creme brulee flavour. Taste is like a 7yr old but much smoother, with a slightly longer finish, which is again cooked fruit with pepper and spice, and only a very light burn. You'll like it if you like Cuban rums; if you lean towards the heavier darker varieties, you might find this a bit light on substance - let's say it's summer rather than cold weather ;)”
