Down on the south coast, Salcombe Distilling Co. has gone and made its very own white spiced rum to go alongside its selection of superb gins! Whitestrand is made with molasses, unrefined sugar and a blend of yeasts, distilled in 60-litre hand-beaten copper pot stills twice - along with a selection of botanicals (including lime, coconut and long pepper) for its second run through the stills. Taking inspiration from Salcombe fruiters, which would sometimes bring home rum, molasses and sugar from the West Indies alongside its hauls of fruits and spices, this is a bright, fruit-forward expression full of citrus, banana and exotic spice.
Lemon and lime, followed by estery banana notes and crushed peppercorn.
Coconut, cardamom spiciness, very slightly buttery, more citrus peels.
Apricot, grapefruit, peppermint and another helping of sweet coconut.
Great tasting rum, full bodied and spicy but with smooth coconut in the background. Fantastic summer drink!
Very interesting rum, and suitable for all kinds of things, but this is a spiced rum, but most definitely a spiced white rum and without the softer vanilla tones that come in a dark rum. In some ways it's more akin to a higher quality tequilla than to a spiced dark rum.
I love this rum! It is so smooth and has a great flavour. I had it with Ginger ale, loads of ice a large slice of lime and the run still comes through nicely. If you love spiced rums then you will love this!
