Neat, it’s dry and fruity and tastes more like a whiskey than a rum. In the finish, it has a smoky tobacco taste, (think of Jim Beam Bourbon) and an alcohol burn that is harsh and unpleasant. Turned into a long drink with the accompaniment of Coca-Cola, this rum is much more enjoyable. That smokiness in the finish is more restrained, the alcohol burn becomes less jarring and overall it becomes a tad sweeter.
It would seem you either like Cuban rum or you don't! Some taste honey, fudge, others can't seem to get past the gentleman's club leather and tobacco (with a touch of fusel oil to finish)! I'm definitely in the first camp, as you can probably tell by my 5 stars. I found this for a similar price to Havana Club 7yr. It has a very similar flavour profile to Havana Club as well; maybe a touch sweeter, but I've not tried them together to test this. Certainly, if you like HC 7yr old then try it!
Smooth Cuban rum with a moderate kick and delightful Apple Pie aftertaste. Not too viscous, this rum is very popular in Cuba where it represents a more affordable choice for sociable drinking. Very pleased that Master of Malt carry this very product. Carries a minimum 5 years of aging in Oak casks with no artificial additives. 38% alcohol. Lovely stuff!
A lovely Cuban rum, a sweet smooth delight that (even though it's younger) works great as a sipper. You won't find better for the price!
