Pusser's 'Gunpowder Proof' Black Label (previously known as Blue Label) is a higher proof traditional British Naval rum, produced using the blending recipe from the Admiralty. Well loved, it picked up a Trophy at the International Spirits Challenge 2016.
The nose is full of dried fruits, dates, prunes, slightly overripe figs. The palate is very sweet, plenty of dark, syrupy, stewed fruits. An interesting pot still character with a pleasant muddiness. Full-bodied. The finish is incredibly long and dark.
Lovely taste that reminds me of dark sugar and toffee. Excellent on its own or with a mixer.
I'm getting more into rum lately as the whisky producers seem to be riding too high on the cost wave these days blatantly exploiting the current popularity, and have to say that this rum is hard to beat if like me you prefer your tipples on the darker, sweeter more sherried side. I only drink spirits as god intended - neat or with a tad of water, and even at 54% this is well managable, with the higher ABV enhancing the flavour. It has everything a rum lover desires.
I'm a huge fan of Woods, but on seeing the fierce debate on here about which of these Navy Dreadnoughts is best I had to try Pusser's Gunpowder proof. Both are easily sinkable, especially on a cold Winter's night with the wind howling outside. Flavour wise, and on the nose, for me the Pusser's gets it thanks to its lovely burnt sugar kick. It's a very close call though, and on VFM Wood's steams into port first.
I've tried a lot of rums over the years but for some reason I missed this one. So drinkable neat. Massive boozy warm flavours of dark fruits and sweet toffee with an aftertaste that lingers forever. My new favourite.
WOW..... as far as rum is concerned.... it doesn't get much better than this... once you adapt to the 54.5% ABV initial kick, you get a sublime warm taste and nose of demerara... just beautiful!!!..... don't waste it by mixing with coke... just a few ice cubes, let them melt a little, then sip... ENJOY!!
