Set sail on an exciting journey around the islands of rum with this offering from Planteray. It combines molasses-based rum from the West Indies Distillery in Barbados and the Rum Co. of Fiji with cane juice rum from Saint Aubin in Mauritius. Combine this with ageing in charred oak barrels to give a rum that simultaneously full and sweet, and fresh and herbal. This combines particularly well with vermouth and bitters in a Palmetto, but it's also great on rocks or mixed with ginger ale.
Fresh grassy notes on the nose with pineapple, orange, toffee and brown banana. Full and sweet on the palate with salted caramel, molasses and a menthol finish.
If you told me this was a coconut rum, I'd say good job. Now knowing it's the 'grassy' fresh cane juice the rum was made from, it makes more sense. That really is the dominant flavour. It's not a rum I want to sip neat. But surprisingly made for the best Ancient Mariner I've ever had. The coconut was still there but not dominant and the flavours of the rum itself came forward more. So maybe this is a good rum to play mixologist with. It's got very similar notes to Elekamule Bitters.
My favourite Plantation so far, and therefore probably my favourite rum. Just the right blend of tropical sweetness, caramel, and proper rum richness and burn, I struggle to see how it could be improved at this age and price
