A dark rum from Mauritius that was bottled at 40% ABV. It honours the now extinct Dodo which was previously native to the Indian Ocean island nation.
Light baking spice, marshmallow vanilla and sparkles of black peppercorn combine.
Drank neat Mauritius Dodo Rum is sweet and smooth, with a slightly heavy consistency, making it feel to a degree like a liqueur. However, there is no depth of flavour, but rather just a generic sweetness which is hard to describe. I suppose what I’m trying to say, is that drank neat this rum is ok, especially for rum enthusiasts like myself who have a sweet tooth. But, it’s only just about ok, because it’s a wee bit bland and boring truth be told. When mixed with Coca-Cola this rum does improve, slightly. The fizzy black pop highlights notes of vanilla which I could detect on my palate and a very faint hint of coffee in the aftertaste. Even so, it still remained too insipid, for my liking.
My husband was gifted a dodo decanter of this rum for Christmas 2023, and he enjoyed not only the rum, but the theatre of the decanter so I planned to get a refill last christmas. Sadly it was out of stock at the time but I was notified when new stock arrived, subsequently I have a bottle hidden away ready for his birthday.
A wonderfully expressive rum in a beautiful bottle. A little sweet with the vanilla at the forefront but with a smooth finish, highly recommended.
