From the Lyme Bay Winery in East Devon comes a combination of warming spice and rich sweetness - Chilli Mead! The spice isn't overbearing or powerful, but balanced with nuance to complement the honeyed profile, and should make it an excellent pairing for strong cheese and red meat dishes.
Simmering dry chilli heat grows underneath layers of floral honey.
My wife purchased some of this when we were out in Tintagel from English Heritage. I was initially taken aback by the bouquet of this and I don’t usually use words like that. I sat and I just admired the aroma for a good 30 seconds. I was not let down by my first sip, absolutely gorgeous. English Heritage add a few mor £s to the cost so after a scrutiny of the label I purchased six more bottles direct. I have also tried the rhubarb, Christmas and original mead, all very good products.
This was a remarkable mead. My wife loves chilli and spicy things. I like mead but dislike spicy things. I bought it on a whim, and I’m absolutely gutted it’s sold out. I think this may be a regular purchase when it’s back in stock! It has a subtle heat and a tiny kick which enhances the natural mead flavours, and it’s a fantastic drink on a cold autumn evening.
An Excellent mead, may be my new favorite, beating Moniack as my previous. Sweet with a pleasant kick of heat in the background.
My Favourite of all the Lyme Bay Meads....and YES!! these are true Meads. This one would be classed as a Metheglin, due to the added spice,...but still a true mead without any grape based wine involved...
