St. Raphaël
Inspired by traditional recipes, Le Quina Ambré from St Raphaël is made in France from a base of white wine, with cinchona bark and other botanicals added. The neo-vintage packaging all feels very appropriate, and works very well over ice simply with a slice of orange.
Rich and velvety caramel, bitter orange peel, dark chocolate and vanilla with a bitter finish.
I first had this in the South of France about 50 years ago. It has a lovely light, warm flavour with a little orange. I've been looking for it ever since that first tasting. Finally I found it here and it's just as good as I remember it. I've introduced my family and friends to it - they all love it too.
Like the summary says, this is an amber/ambrato vermouth in which the quinine element is very subtle. The base is very pleasant, with an oxidised/raisiney flavour kind of like madiera or marsala, but with less sweetness. I prefer a stronger cinchona punch, however. If you want a sweet vermouth that is less sweet than usual, this is perfect. If you want an exemplar ambrato/quinquina, there are better options.
