Drambuie
Drambuie is a very famous whisky liqueur made with Scotch whisky, heather and herbs and spices. Produced in West Lothian, Scotland, Drambuie offers flavours such as anise, nutmeg and saffron.
Drambuie has a long history dating back to the 18th century when it was first created in Scotland.
Drambuie is often enjoyed neat or on the rocks, but can also be used in cocktails. It is a versatile liqueur that can be enjoyed in many ways.
I bought a bottle to make a rusty nail drink. Unfortunately I think it has a most awful taste. It is bitter an extremely sweet, much like Jägermeister in taste. The whisky component is totally overpowered by the herb and spice component, and undetectable in the taste. It is in fact an overpriced cough sirup, about as sophisticated as coca cola. I will pour the rest of the bottle out, and forever despise anyone who expresses any form of affection towards this while concoction.
I don't think this liquor was lighter...quite strong as 40% alc and quite sweet beyond my expectation. Too sweet for me for drink the liquor as is so I have to add 2 parts of Johnny Walker in it. On the palate I can taste strong honey with spices finish and for me it quite satisfying, reminded me of Southern Comfort but as I mentioned, it way sweeter.
We get through 3 or 4 bottles a year, mainly as Rusty Nail, which I make up in half gallon lots with a selection of Speyside, Island & Highland malts, and most importantly, then leave to “Marry” for several months. Don’t ruin your Rusty Nails with cheap blended whisky ! Chives Regal will do at a pinch if you don’t have time to vat-up your own mix of Malts.
It is too sweet on its own for most people but mix it 50/50 with whisky (called Rusty Nail or Stag's Breath) and you have something I could drink all day.
You don't get a lot of smoke or peat for a whisky liqueur and fortunately this doesn't have that bandaid flavour that some have. This has a rich slightly citric flavour and ages well, too. Love it.
