A bitter liqueur that's a nod to the historic 'Dr. J. Hostetter's Celebrated Stomach Bitters'. This modern expression is a deliciously balanced, bittersweet celebration of botanicals, including rose, gentian, chinchona bark, and carmine extract. With notes of red fruits, woody spices, and earthy herbs, it'll work wonders in a Negroni or Boulevardier.
Earthy cinchona bark, with fragrant spices and twists of waxy citrus.
This is delicious, and I'll definitely buy it again. But I think the comparisons w/ Campari are off. Yes, Dr H's is bittersweet, complex, and herbal, with sort of a cola/chinotto flavour profile, but does not lead with that massively bitter gentian punch that Campari and the like have. If you swap this in for Campari in a Negroni, etc., you're going to end up with... a sweet & unbalanced drink, imo. The better substitution is for vermouth in a Manhattan. Very nice just with soda, too.
Love the name and the heritage. Taste matches the history look and feel of this newcomer. Lighter than comparable bitters so expect to see it do really well
Dr. Hostetter's is delicious! Cherry fruitiness with a bitter finish. My new go-to red bitter.
