Cynar
Cynar is an Italian aperitif liqueur made using 13 different plants. The main flavour is, in fact artichoke, and it gets its name "Cynar" from the Latin for artichoke "Cynara scolymus". It has a bittersweet flavour, and it works well served with ice, soda and a slice of orange (very popular in Italy). It works well in cocktails made with Campari, where it can replace the Campari with great effect.
Covid restrictions led to a whiskey hobby. An aged palate (and digestive system in general) led me from whiskey neat to whiskey cocktails. Good sense led me to Cynar.
I find it pairs extremely well with bourbon. 2:1 bourbon to cynar is excellent, plus some citrus. Swap it for the Campari in a Third Man cocktail, Or us it as the amaro in a Paper Plane. Fantastic!
A classic bitter liqueur, adds more bite to a Negroni cocktail.
If you prefer a Negroni with a slightly more bitter edge, this is the one. Great on it's own or in a Milano/Torino cocktail.
