    Mondino Amaro

Mondino Amaro is a classically bitter German amaro made in the foothills of the Bavarian Alps using bitter orange, rhubarb and yellow gentian, among other locally sourced ingredients. Makes a mighty fine Spritz, and it wouldn't look out of place in a Negroni or served with tonic water and a slice of orange.

    Stick to Campari

I tried this as an alternative to Campari for making negronis. It is significantly more expensive but a little underwhelming (sweeter, a little more orangey, but overall less flavour, less body, less botanical).

I may need to rethink my stereotypes about German drinks culture

This was a pleasant surprise! With Campari as a standard for comparison, this is slightly less bitter, but still pleasantly so, and the fruit element is less candied orange and more cherry, dark berry, etc. I'd say it's approximately as sweet as Campari but with a lighter body, so it reads as more fruity-sweet and less sticky-sweet. I would place it in the middle of a continuum between Campari on an intensely bittersweet end, and Bonanto on a quaffable, fresh-fruit end. I think it's superior to Campari in an aperitif/spritz, but works less well as a Campari substitute in a negroni b/c the distinctive fruit flavours that make this so nice might be lost under a standard sweet vermouth.
