Scapegrace
A particularly intriguing expression from New Zealand's Scapegrape - a black gin! It gets its dark hue from its botanicals, which include aronia berry, butterfly pea, saffron, pineapple and sweet potato, among others. What's more, the spirit changes colour when mixed with tonic water, becoming a various shades of pink and blue.
Surprisingly fruity, with pineapple and lemon up front. A slow build of spicy juniper.
Peppery and oily, a soft hint of mint leaf developing. There's still some of the tropical fruit from the nose underneath the herbaceous elements.
Dill, redcurrant, juniper and cut grass.
Bought has part of birthday present for my other half, I am in the good books she is very impressed and will add it to her own list of favourites.
Worth every penny
A delicious gin. It transforms from black to pink when tonic water is added too. A great gin to bring out at a party.
Update from 16.8.21. I always try any new gin neat to taste it properly before the tonic is added. Unusually, Scapegrace Black Gin didn’t taste brilliant neat (liquorice overtones) but tastes delicious with a Feverfew Light tonic. I shall try more combinations of tonics and garnishes. Nice to have a gin that has complexity
Maybe just my taste buds, but this gin has a strong flavour of liquorice. Not sure it is one for me. I’ll experiment with different tonics and see if I can find something complementary
